Ahhhhh- holiday vacation

Well I'm out on vacation from the office until 01/02/25 - no on call, no weekend, no call me if you need me. I won't even drive by the building! While I do love my job, I also love my hard earned vacation and I have to take these days or lose them.

2025 marks 52 years of state employment for me - that's a long time to do anything. Hope all of you that are still working will be able to get some much deserved time off.

I retired from the state of CA in 2022, with that many years in your most likely losing money still working!

Some people enjoy working...I am 69 and my husband is 84, we are self employed and still working.

@spumoni99 Nah- not when you factor in I'm also collecting social security as I am past the age of income penalty and my pension will increase the longer I work.

I've been at my job for 46 years; and collecting SS, no penalty. Never had so much money in my life!

@bmorechick But, and I hope not...you could pass before you collect any pension at all.

My mother worked until she passed and she didn't financially need to.

She had plans for her retirement that were never realized.

Of course, it is your choice, your decision.

I retired at age 55. I know there is no way I could have done my job much longer. I liked it, but the stress was awful.

Enjoy your much deserved vacation. You earned it and then some.

Wow, vacation well deserved.

I work for the State also, retire/rehire.

@qvcfreak Just curious, but were you rehired as an active state employee after you retired, or are you a contract employee? I know several co-workers who retired from state service, but after a year they have come back in different capacities as contract employees - gives them a lot of flexibility. I have played with this idea, but I like my job too much to leave it yet and some of the jobs open for contract I would not be interested in right now.

I'm a full time employee. I worked HHSC IT for 30 years, retired at 51. I stayed home 4 years then went back, I worked CPS for 3 1/2 years then applied with DFPS IT and have been with IT for 3 years now.

I work both Christmas Eve and the day after Christmas. So Christmas Day will be my only day off next week. I guess I should be grateful to even be off Christmas Day.

Enjoy the day! I'm working Christmas Eve and Christmas Day......but as they say, somebody's gotta do it. LOL. But actually I'm ok with it. I knew what my job entailed when I took it.

I have a friend who had 30 years in at the age of 47 and retired from state service - we all started around the age of 17-18. Then she worked for FEMA for 15 years and retired from there. She's a year older than me and at 70, she's now embarked on working at a local college in her town as a contract employee, orienting new students! I would love that kind of job...

I applied for County and wanted to work 10 years but they offered me a job the week after I had restarted with the State again.
