A Danger in Posting Photos Online

Among the dangers of posting photos online:

AI was used to turn a teen's photo into a nude image. Now the teen is fighting for change to protect other kids.

I can only imagine what pedophiles are doing with the programs.

The danger is now significantly increased with the naming of sites and enough information in the article to provide search phrasing.

I saw that. Really messed up.

I also don't get people who put picture after picture of their grandchildren or nieces/nephews all over Facebook. Cute to look at, but I don't agree with it.

Originally, this was the great thing about FB. We have family all over the country and could share ski trips, pet photos, graduations, and basically keep up with each other. We haven't done that for years. It's all ads now.

It's hard for me to understand how someone can legally take your photo, change it, and distribute it.

Our family has a private site that we use to share family photos of the children, but I see a lot of pics on my FB feed. I never see an ad, thank goodness. I use Facebook Purity, they block most ads, and the rest are gone because of my adblocker.

Photos can also contain data about time, location, etc. I never post pictures.

I don't know anything about FB, but just thinking........

Even if a family/real friends receive photos from a person, it could be possible that those photos could be shared to their own family/friends and other friends/family who could, in turn, share with their other unknown (to us) contacts.

The sharing might go on and on.........

Who knows where those photos could 'end up' world-wide.

Right? or Wrong?

Yes, and even a former friend or disgruntled co-worker could share. I think in Florida there was a women who discovered that a former high school classmate had modified and/or shared her photos. I think she hadn't seen him in years so it was sort of amazing that she found out and I can't remember how she did it.

Appropriating photos and pretending to be someone else (like a professional model) is how catfishing began.

And now with sophisticated AI it's almost impossible to tell if a photo has been altered or manipulated.

I have FB set up to notify me if I'm tagged in a post.

The other day some guy had had taken my background photo (plus my name) and copied it to his FB page. He had done the same with many other people.

Found out that, currently, you cannot hide or make your background photo or profile photo private any longer. Everything else on my FB account has been marked private for many many years.

Ended up reporting him to FB. Not sure if they will do anything about it.

I've deleted my profile and background photos. Also all my photos I had previously posted on my page. I realize FB has a certain amount of this information stored on their site anyway, but it helps to keep down the less sophisticated hackers at least.

I also no longer comment on public sites and rarely even "like" any of their posts, which is somewhat disappointing since most of these are local people/businesses.

I'd get off FB altogether if I didn't need it for local information. It's become our new version of the Yellow Pages.

Too many sick weridos out there today. Disgusting. These are the people that should be locked up.

I have worked in IT since 1983. I don't remember ever posting a picture of myself. I have been on social media since 1993 in a small way, but as far as I know no photos of me.

Maybe relatives have, but I don't know about it if they did, and they would have been baby or school photos.

@We rescue cats are you satisified with Facebook Purity? Does it filter out unwanted posts you don't want to see, like sponsored or join?

I currently have Social Fixer and it hasn't been updated in months so my whole feed is filled with sponsored posts. I might as well just delete it from the extensions.

I am not on Facebook, other than a group I joined to help with information for parents at my daughter's university. I don't post, especially not pictures. My daughter wasn't allowed to have a Facebook page when she was younger. Now ia young adult, she chooses not to be on Facebook.

A poster (beauty forum) who did this a few years back was caught because someone recognized the model. If she was not exposed by another poster, I would have never known.
