What is it abt "Getting Old" & "Not Enough Time"

My beloved, late Dad used to love telling the joke:

"~ Getting old is like a roll of Toilet Paper -

The closer you approach the end, the faster it goes."

Why is it - There's not enough hours in the day to accomplish what we used to be able to do in the veritable blink of an eye then?

I move a lot slower than I used to (arthritis). I really thought time might slow down when I retired...it did not, in fact I think it goes twice as fast!

@QVCkitty1 I know, right? The last 10 years or so of my work life felt like forever..only weekends & vacation time went by fast then!

I'm over 70 and gave up my Type A personality/style the day I retired. It was strange at first to be so stress-free and able to relax.

I don't care if I leave things undone. Who will care after I'm dead?

Time goes so fast and I'd rather enjoy my time than worry about getting everything done right away.

I love yard work, walking/playing with my dog, being with my kids and their families, helping at charities, gardening, meeting up with friends, working out at the senior center, my prayer group, church, etc etc. The rest can wait.

With the internet & social media, we sometimes we let ourselves get roped into too many distractions. Much of which are not good for us. They prevent us from accomplishing things that are important to us. It's not good for our productivity & mental health. They also interfer with forming real & meaningful relationships with others. I have a rule when my husband & I go to performances. We keep our cell phones turned off while we're sitting there & waiting for the show. I often see couples going on the internet or playing games on their phones instead of spending a few minutes interacting with each other. One time, while waiting for a performance I struck up a conversation with a man who was alone & sitting next to me. He mentioned that his wife reciently had surgery. He told me that the first thing his wife said when she woke up was, "Where's my cell phone? Where's my laptop?" I tell my husband we're on a date & you're going to treat my like I matter. The phone doesn't matter. I matter. You matter.

I've moved away from obsessing over every little detail in the news & what's going on in politics. I closed my Facebook account years ago. I only have necessary apps on my phone. Now that I'm older, I'm doing my life the way I want. I have only so many years left. Since getting away from it, I've found more time to sew, crochet, cook new recipes, & learn new things. I've always liked learning & doing new things. Some people call it being a Trad Wife now, but it's not a fad for me. I'm proud of what I've done with my life. I like to be there for my loved ones. They are what make me happy. so, I make time for them. Everyone needs find time for whatever it is that gives meaning to their own personal lives. My life works for me. Others will have to find what's right for them.

For me, it not not enough time but rather the dwindling down of time.

Yesterday I wrapped presents for all the grandkids and it did indeed occur to me that this might be the last year. Never had such a thought when I was younger.

I am stepping away from things and events that I no longer enjoy, things I did out of a sense of 'duty'. I'm turning them over to the younger people that can step up and gain that sense of community that I have enjoyed for all these years.

And @Still Raining I do agree, this could be my last chance to read that book, visit that museum or shop. . .

Time does seem like it moves faster as we age. I sometimes wonder how I accomplished so much while I was working. I suppose I move slower although it doesn’t seem like it. I feel just as active.

I found this explanation online:

“Time seems to go faster as we age because our brains process less information as we get older, leading to fewer distinct memories being created, making each period of time feel like it passes more quickly; essentially, when we're young, we experience a lot of new things, which are more readily encoded in our memory, making time feel slower, while as adults, our days can blend together more easily, making time feel like it's going by faster.”

Agree @Imaoldhippie ! Just figuring how to pursue things these days takes longer, find out how to proceed, set up account, Double verify account, send email, wait for response, ughhh.
I soo miss the days, you called and a person answered to help you- it wasn't that long ago!

I don't mind getting old but things aren't like the past. I'm slower, more easily tired, etc. My health has gone downhill too.

My late husband gave me the best years of his life and I gave him the best of mine too. That in itself is a gift which I will never regret.

Many years ago, before he retired, my dad was very apprehensive about what would he do with all that time on his hands when he wasn't working.

He worried about that.

A year into retirement, he noted that he was so busy that if he ever had to go back to work, he wasn't sure how he'd ever fit it into his schedule! lol

@Sweet Kitties Social media has changed our world. In many ways of course for the best--in other ways in my opinion not for the good of humans and interactions in real life.

Texting in lieu of phoning and face etc., filters plus competition online making so many feel bad about themselves esp. with younger people and even older too. A fact.

I got off Facebook a year after my son died or less and signed into Instagram only to see the same kind of thing.But fun things as well. It's hard for some of us however. I like message boards, but then there can be snarkinesss (you see - it we all see it). But I feel like you do as you say getting roped into social media taking up so much time in our lives...quality time in real life. I'm not hooked on my phone. I like my iPad and laptop...can see so much better in detail too. I'm to blame as well with not calling people back and much has to do with watching qvc and online qvc and of course just reading things as we all do online however I'm depressed to a certain degree most of the time due to that life event I mentioned.

I'm sure many here may have had their life altered as well.

This was why I put a hold on FB and other places. I think these boards can be quite healthy and helpful for us, finding friends and people like ourselves can relate too. As long as we are are respected it's all good - at times I have trepidation posting on a subject guess "I gotta grow some" as they say lol. I use to be on here so very often and it was fun meeting so many nice funny people. We even went off to start FB page and then I lost my way around here after I left FB later. So many good people. I will try to pop on here more often. It's just not a regular thing anymore. Nothing really is.

Wish it was.

And must get back to you @Monikamm soon. I'm sorry for not getting back. Never got my knee done... can't believe it! Long story... too long in fact..my other parts are falling apart meanwhile--ugh! Have a good weekend all I had to come by to edit this dissertation! lol. Too long and typing when my shoulder aches so doesn't help my errors.
