Christmas candy alert

My husband has once again, brought up the pretty shapes and tastes of that hard Christmas candy. It's his childhood thing. So I need to be on the lookout for it. We don't need it, but if I see it, I can put it in a candy dish. The colors alone would be enough for me.

@qualitygal if you do an online search for old fashioned hard christmas candy you will find many stores and online sources for it.

I’m not sure If you have a Cracker Barrel in your area but they have the candy I bought two bags a couple weeks ago

Christmas Eve, my grandparents would arrive for dinner. My grandfather had three bottles of Cold Duck or Champagne of some type. My Mom would be busy in the kitchen preparing a wonderful dinner of crab imperial. Dad, his parents, my sister and I would be in the living room. I can remember like yesterday, 😢 my grandmother giving us candy toys and a bag of chocolate coins, wrapped in hard gold foil! (Don't ask me what day it is now).

A few days later, a friend of my other grandmother arrived with with a big box of "imperfect" chocolates from Whitmans Chocolates, where she worked for years! They were not in the marked box, the Sampler box, just take a guess!🍫

A great Christmas childhood memory! Yes, we ate the crab, we were not given chicken fingers, we said thank you, sat at the table till the end, with no entertainment other than listen to the adults, of course, we were included in the conversations.

You can probaly order some from Vermont Country Store. I remember my grandfather always having it and I liked it too.

For some reason no one in my family ever did candy. No idea why. Dessert in all their glory were always around.

The year I was 7 I discovered olives! Best year ever 😍

I adored seeing all those beautiful ribbon candies on my grandmother's coffee table. My Mom would always put out a gigantic peppermint log (tree) at Thanksgiving. Just after New Years Day the remains would be thrown away. It was so big there was always some to throw away.

I LOVE hard filled fruit candies too! Found lots on Amazon. Search there. Our favorites are the cherry and raspberry filled hard candies but hard to pick from such a great assortment. My granny's coffee table candy dish was always filled with these. Now mine too!

I have a discount grocery store where I live. They offer all types of grains, sugars and candy in small plastic bags sold by weight.

They always have hard candy all year around. If I have any in the house, my grandson fills his pockets. I have already given him a bag or two, but my son does not want him eating all of that sugar. Grandson is 16.

I make all sorts of candy at Christmas time...including hard candy and clear toy candy. It is just sugar or corn syrup and water, a pinch of baking soda ( if you want the candy to be clear and not opaque) and flavoring for hard candy, but no flavoring for clear toy candy.

I have lots of candy molds, but sometimes I just pour the mixture on a flat baking sheet and break it into pieces when cool.( I do that when I have extra and don't have more empty molds. It sets up fast and hardens and I don't want it cooling in my pan. It's difficult to get out if it does.

My mom made lots of candy at Christmas and put it in old fruitcake tins and other tins. You walked in the door, candy was shoved in your mouth! She made fudge and I never did like fudge.

She made marshmallows covered with chocolate and nuts, and she made lots of peanut brittle! It was really good. But the best I ever ate comes from Sees! OH my goodness!!!!

We had hard candy, ribbon candy, filled, and those pretty little ones with flowers in the center, and lots of little peppermint sticks on the tree (and my dad and the dog ate those little candy canes--none left when the tree came down!).

We always had chocolate straws at Christmas, hard candy in pastel colors on the outside with chocolate filling. The original company that made them is still in business in Philadelphia. I've ordered cans of the candy fom them but kind of pricey with s&h.

@qualitygal If you are speaking of the barley sugar Christmas toy candy, I haven't seen it in quite a while. My cousin used to give it to us when we were kids, but my mom was afraid we'd break a tooth. I think they used to sell it locally at one of the farmer's markets, and I think you could get it in Lancaster. You can probably get online, because there are images posted.

My MIL has mentioned wanting some several times.

Swiss Colony has their's listed for $36.99 for 30 oz.

Amazing how something as simple as Christmas candy can bring back so many good memories to many of us! My grandmother always had a pretty crystal footed candy dish filled with it right after Thanksgiving. My brother only liked the filled raspberry ones so she always put those in the mix also. I was not a hard candy fan...but my mother always did the gumdrop tree...my favorite.

We had a Sees Candy kiosk in our mall years ago, then they tore down the mall...the only place I see it now is at another small stand about thirty milles away in a huge furniture store complex....We don't go often but when we do I get the chocolate truffle coated with chocolate sprinkles....usully go in the summer so can't take any home unless I take an ice chest with me...it would melt getting it to the car!

@silkyk those hard filled candy were always in our candy dishes . As a child I didn't care for them , I preferred the little chocolate looking Christmas ornaments . Now I do like them though Probably due to the nostalgia.
