Remember these Stores?

Every time I see a picture of one, I become nostalgic. Before my son was born, as was policy in those days, I went on maternity leave six weeks before he was due.

I spent most of the first week pasting my huge stash of S&H Green Stamps into their books. I'd been saving them for years. It was a big, time-consuming task.

When the last stamp was pasted, I took all my books to the redemption center and cashed them in for every baby item I imagined I'd need. It was one grand shopping spree and it was free. Lots of fun.

Yes, I remember, @Kachina624 . My mom would get them and let me and my sister lick them and put them in the books. The only thing I remember her redeeming them for was a pair of lamps for our living room. When did the discontinue Green Stamps? I don't remember saving them as an adult and I know I am older than you.

I can't recall what stores gave these stamps out. Was it grocery stores?

I remember S&H green stamps when I was very young. My mom and my Nana would let us put them in the books. I remember they had stacks and stacks of those books.

Yes, I remember the S&H Green Stemps redemption centers.

I especially remember the Blue Chip Stamp redemption stores. A guy I knew as a young teen would take us gals to the bowling alley to bowl for blue chip stamps. We had the fun and his mom would get the stamps.

I also remember and got some things from the Betty Crocker points that I'd save up and mail in. I miss that one.

@tends2dogs. I think all the grocery stores had to give them to be competitive. I don't remember when they disappeared. I don't recall ever saving them after my marathon pasting session.

In my local area of WV, A & P, Kroger and one gas station gave out stamps with purchases. The S + H green stamp store closed here around 1984-ish; I drove my mom, aunt and grandmother over to redeem all of our books of stamps and the trunk of my car was full!

I think our Top Value stamp store closed before the Green Stamp store.

I got a lot of items with S&H Green stamps. I still have some of the items...small kitchen appliances, cutting boards, etc.

The redemption center was about a mile from my home.

My mother always collected as well. I used to help paste the stamps in the books when I was a kid.

If I remember correctly, the A&P stores had their own Plaid stamps.

@Kachina624 I certainly do remember the S&H Green Stamp

Store. With all those books of stamps, in the 1960's, I got my first set of dishes, Pyrex, pans and a Costco baby stroller.

I still have most of the set of clear Pyrex bakeware and my Pyrex set of Butterprint mixing bowls. Sixty years later, I am still using all those Revere Ware pans and Blue Cornflower Corning Ware and Pyrex.

That Costco stroller was so well made, I used it for five babies.

Back in the 60's Stop and Shop gave Top Value Stamps and I also saved some of those. A & P gave Plaid Stamps. Mostly, things were purchased with the Green Stamps. The store was five minutes from my house.

It was fun, collecting the stamps, from the supermarket and gas station.

@Puzzle Piece In addition to Green Stamps, I saved the Betty

Crocker coupons.

I bought much of my Fiesta dishes and my Oneida Stainless

steel flatware and storage chests from the Betty Crocker catalog.

I was sad to see the catalog discontinued. After that, I started

purchasing my Fiesta from Macy's.

Fiesta is about 5 miles from me, I don't own a piece.. My neighbor just retired from there this year. and myDILs cupboards fell off the wall. they were so heavy, so she parted with them.I don't remember Betty Crocker having a catalog.

As a kid I remember me and my siblings having the task of licking and paste the Green and the Blue Chip Stamps in the books, if I remember I think they were given out by grocery stores and maybe the gas stations, never did go to any of the redemption stores with our parents though.

We would get the S & H green stamps at our local A & P grocery store and the gas station ( ? AMACO ) .

I do remember the stamps all through the 1960 's & 1970's . My GrandMother said they used to collect the stamps well before I was born. I found this info

The S&H Green Stamps program was discontinued in 1989. The program was a rewards program that allowed customers to collect stamps at participating retailers and redeem them for products from a catalog.

S&H Green Stamps were first offered in certain regions in 1896, but were most popular in the United States from the 1930s to the 1980s. The program was at its peak in the 1960s and 1970s, when S&H issued more stamps than the U.S. Postal Service "

I still have and use my heating pad and bundt cake pan (heavy aluminum) that I bought w/S&H stamps.

@Kachina624 We had S&H stores and a plaid stamp store about 15 minutes from home. I don't recall Blue chip stamps. I remember my mom got a tabletop charcoal grill, and I think some Avacodo colored skillet/dutch oven set. This was probably late sixties or early seventies. We also loved Service Merchandise, David Weis, and Dalhkempers. You had to order, and they would send via conveyor belt to the pick up window.

One local grocery store gave out coupons/tickets for rides to our local amusement park. We didn't shop there, but one summer, when we were coming into the park, a lady gave us a BAG full of those tickets. My gosh, as 12-15 year olds, we thought we had won a million bucks. Those tickets had to be used within about a week. We went back several days and rode, rode, rode. It was mid seventies - long before there were admittance fees to parks. The grocery store was Thorofare. It was Thorofare days at the park. Great memories for teenagers. The amusement park closed the following year.

We also had Merchants Green Stamps, our local Food Fair chain gave these out. Every time we needed a new toaster oven, electric can opener, etc off we would go to redeem our stamps

Once the stamps stopped lots of stores started with double coupons, which some still have, such as Wegmans, Giant

I remember the stamps and booklets, but I have no memory of what we ever purchased with them.

I remember pasting those stamps in the books for my mother. Thanks for the memory @Kachina624
