Old fashioned words

I was thinking about my Great Grandfather. He never said "sofa" or "couch", he called it a "settee". People never say settee now. What are some other old fashioned words that you heard in the past?

our couch was always the davenport. My grandpa called a suitcase a grip, grandparents complained of rheumatism, someone they knew had apoplexy and flu or a bad cold was "the grippe"

@smoochy I'm chuckling here. because there are still some very old Italians where I grew up that say so and so has the grip. They never say a cold or the flu. So funny to read your post. I grew up east coast.

I also heard the oldtimers call luggage a valise. As a inside joke with Hubs, I'll call our luggage a velise. It cracks him up.

@smoochy Ah, fond memories. My grandmother would talk about my grandad's rheumatism and her vertigo. She also used the word dysentery rather than diarrhea. So quaint!
