Drastically reducing my Facebook involvement

wake up call for me. Many hours a day immersed in that cesspool of toxic, disturbing, sad, political, misinformed content is taking a toll. As much as I enjoy communicating with my friends, it's not worth the anxiety it's causing. I tend to internalize the cr@p I read about. And I obsess over certain things like news stories about crimes, stories of animal and child cruelty, other things. I already have issues with anxiety. Don't need social media making it worse. I like it here because it's much more sanitized, controlled. You folks are mostly friendly, supportive. I don't lie awake thinking about things I read here.

@smoochy. I know exactly what you mean. I spent about two weeks trying to dispel rumors among the people in and around Asheville, NC. I never heard so many ridiculous claims and ignorant people. I finally had to back off for my own sanity.

It's completely self destructive to make a comment on a political discussion. There are some fervent, vicious people posting there. Thank goodness it's peaceful here.

I stepped away from Facebook at least 5 years ago and was immediately grateful I made the move.

Completely agree with what you say about the negativity. I realized what a waste of energy and time. Final thing that did it for me was a friend constantly posting pics of her hair blowouts. Such a waste of time.

I do not use Facebook, but much of my family does! They share an EARFUL of the positive and negative happenings there! I have 3 family members who stopped speaking to each other during the last election cycle, and I doubt they will ever speak again sadly! Things were rather polarizing and contentious there, per their statements.😐

I appreciate that some of our Forum family does, and keeps us updated regarding pertinent host postings, and news shared by the Q there!😊 I was so excited when someone kindly shared that Q host Vanessa had her bundle of LOVE❤️ recently! I hope mother and baby are doing well!💝💝

I never joined, didn't see the fascination of FB, IG, X, etc.

That said DS said he and his single, eligible buddies have decided to also ditch social media and all dating apps. They all said too many fakes out there wasting their time.

They want to meet someone in person. Like in the dark ages, how your parents met. 🤤

Hi all! Never had FB never will, don't care what others are doing or have done, also all the other platforms. Call me old school because for me its a waste of time. Sometimes it can be informative and a good way to communicate with long distance family members but most times it can evoke emotions like resentment, jealousy and frustration by looking at other people's lives. Waste of time and energy. Just my opinion, those who enjoy it Right on! 🤗

@smoochy et al, you can stop viewing a lot of that stuff in your feed by managing and filtering your account. I do it all the time.

I am on Facebook, but the groups I belong to or follow are all sports related, local groups, Jersey shore locations, animal welfare, and holiday themed groups. Every once in awhile someone goes crazy about a local issue (parking, traffic etc), but nothing outrageous or political. I guess am lucky that my groups have good mods and/or people who are respectful.

I don't have FB, but I can read some that are public. Valerie Parr Hill, a friends public public page with a sick child, Caroline Gracie, some local music groups, etc. I know some people sadly, who found out about family members passing on FB. I'm sure it's good for some keeping in touch. Next door is also a mess. Mostly negative complaints about everything.

I've already backed off some news these past few weeks. The constant political mess is just too much. The hate just gets too much some days. I have my candidates, but I don't hate someone because they have a different political view than I do.
So many stories with divided neighborhoods over political signs in their yards.

I never was on Facebook until about a week ago. I joined a Facebook page for parents of kids who attend a certain university. Housing information is coming out for the 2025-2026 year. My daughter will be a sophmore and the university doesn't promise any housing beyond freshman year. Hoping to get information/tips. My daughter has never been on Facebook all thru school years (up to High School). I didn't want her in that mess. Now that she's in college, it's her decision but she is not interested to do so.

@smoochy ...........I have been going through my "friends" on FB and deleting many. I have found several that have not posted in years. I also delete ones that I have no idea why we are friends.

I am very tired of the political posts too. I dont believe the BS no matter who they are about.

I will keep FB because of real friends, family and a few local groups I belong to.

I have a facebook account...I never engage with anyone, I have the account to sell on Marketplace.

I did follow one event on facebook so that I could remember the date....I did not know at the time I could 'save' it for future reference, nor did I realize it was public when I followed the page. A friend mentioned the event..and that I followed that page, for some reason it irked me.

Shortly after that she friended me, then 3 other people I know friended me, ugh....I never engage nor do they engage with me, so I am not sure what the point was. Is it to show you have lots of friends??

I ended up opening a fake account to sell - once the items on my original facebook account under my real name are sold, I will close the account and just use the facebook account to sell.

I joined to keep up with favorite authors and when their new books come out. I don't share any personal information and I scroll right passed political and nasty comments. I'm so glad the mods here poof political content.

I agree with you @FlyersGirl . I have 35 "friends" on Facebook and am very selective with the groups I follow (about 6 or 7). It has worked out well for me also.

I do get friend requests but I ignore anyone that I don't know well. I did not join Facebook for a long time. Once in awhile I would check it out. And once I clicked on a site and it messed up my computer at work. That was enough to make me be very cautious.

But I do like that I am able to keep in contact with friends living far away, especially one from my college days that lives in North Carolina. She was affected by the hurricane Helene.
