ITALIAN AND POLISH CASTLES....

are so very, very beautiful! A few more castles to dream about-

ITALY:

Boccale Castle, built by the fabled Medici family, and just minutes from Livorno. So gorgeous, almost unreal:

Rocca Scaligara, bordering fabulous Lake Garda, 12th century--

Forte di Bard, picturesquely climbing the hill, built by the House of Savoy in Italy's Aosta Valley, gateway to the Alps...

POLAND:

Czosha Castle, in southwestern Poland, now opened as a very atmospheric inn--

Pieskowa Skala Castle, Renaissance castle that was home to ancient Polish noble families, not far from Krakow:

Stobnica Castle, on the edge of the Notecka Forest in western Poland-- a fifteen floor new castle construction, built in the magnificent medieval style.

Nice to know they're still building them! The stuff that fairy tales are made of....

What grand and majestic residences. I wonder what it was like to live in those times, how did they manage to build them, how did they heat them?

All that water in that one shot. Fungus, mold , etc.

They didn't have bathrooms back then, sewers, etc.

probably thru pots into the water.

Mad King Ludwig had a good place. DisneyLand was modeled after it. Austria, I believe.

@SharkE. It was modeled after Neuschwanstein Castle in Bravaria. It's my favorite and in such a beautiful setting

Oh they are just beautiful! And built before modern methods were available, which is amazing in and of itself. Both sets of my grandparents were born in Europe (Poland, Slovakia) and my grandmom from Poland would tell us stories of her family "going to the country" to look at the "Kasztel" (castles) in the forest when she was a young girl. I remember she would say the top floors were in heaven 💜.

My sisters and I have always talked about going to our mother land, but have never found a good time since we all are still working and vacation schedules never clicked.

I would love to tour all of these stunning spectacular magnificent castles!!!!! The people involved in the construction of these castles must have been masters at their trades. I find each one beautiful and wouldn't mind spending some time in each!!!!!

They are all beautiful. That last one that's sitting on the water, I don't know if I'd want to live in that one. It looks close enough to land so thats not the problem, it's just sitting on all that water that bothers me for some reason.

visited Germany, primarily Bavaria, in 2007. When my daughter was stationed there That castle is indescribable.

@SharkE , the whole plumbing thing with the older ones does give me the willies. In a lot of Elizabethan castles in England, I think it was just, well, put another layer of rushes or straw down on the floor-- gack! I've heard that some castles had "interesting" and ingenious (for the time) drainage systems of some sort or another....

@bmorechick , your story of your Polish grandmother touched me. Her child-like wonder at going to see the kasztels in the forest-- so very sweet....

@JudyL , I know what you mean. With that one, even though you can't see it, they built a whole island first, then set the structure on it. But if that's the case, why not leave some land around it? I don't like the water lapping right around the building like that either, frankly. Stobnica is the only modern castle in the group, so they must have had to observe some codes for building, one would think.

Indeed this one is on everyone's list. Sort of bare inside tho.

What I remember is the hike up from the parking. Then the tour started by taking us up several flights of stairs! Do they still do that?

@Oznell Yeah, I'm a big reader of history way back when. Always wanted to see the Palace of Versailles.

You think the way it looks now is the way it was hundreds of yrs. ago. Uh, No. The men did their business in the corners. Women squatted where they could find a spot and arrange all their undergarments.

Dogs ran free thru the entire place. They seldom washed their hair let it build up oil so they could get

those high hairstyles and insert decorations into the matted mess. They always carried little containers of

perfume and a hankerchief to wave away people's smells. They took sniffs of their little containers of perfume to escape the people who never bathed.

For some reason they thought taking a bath was bad for the body I've read. The peons had to empty chamberpots out the window that was kept under the bed of their masters.

Reason why Kings and Queens took what they called

pilgrimages was to leave long enough so the whole place could be cleaned and washed and scrubbed.

Like an annual airing out.
