Do You Remember going Trick or Treating ?

I must be bored today but I was just sitting here watching the news talking about Halloween coming up and it made me think back to when I was a child and we went trick or treating. The police in the neighborhood would drive around and give out candy as we walked the streets going to homes. Then I remembered one of the trick or treat lines we would say when a homeowner opened the door. We would say "trick or treat smell my feet now give me something good to eat ! " I think we were somewhere around 9 to 11 yrs old. Kids will be kids

So just for fun do you remember trick or treating and any trick or treat lines you said ?

Oh yes, I can remember my brother 3 years older taking me out and leaving me! I was so scared.

Yes, I do remember trick or treating. I would get a huge bag of candy by the end of the night. It was a time when more people would give candy. My mother would allow me to eat only a few pieces of candy each week. The candy would last me for almost a year.

It was possibly my favorite holiday. There was one house that gave out a full-size Hershey's bar. 🎃😻

I sure do remember, we had 3 nights of trick or treating and we covered the town ! I remember there was one house that gave out nickel and that was exciting !

When I was little, my parents did not trust sending us out and could not take us themselves. So, I got to go trick or treating only at my grandmother's and at her neighbor's.

When I was about 12 or 13, I took my five year old sister trick or treating throughout the neighborhood and beyond. What fun!

Yes I remember going trick or treating on my grandmother's street which was very rural.

Every single little home on that mile long road had their lights on and were giving out candy. We carried pillow cases and they were heavy by the end of the night. My mom and a couple of my aunts always went with us as a lot of cousins came too. It was a big event at my grandmothers when we were kids, fun costumes, happy memories........Even though I never was a big Halloween person I enjoyed it and did the same with my own kids.

I'm 74 and I still remember we carried a pillowcase for our candy and many times the pillowcase was full when we got back home. It was a fun time and one of my favorites as a child.

I lived in a very small development growing up. When I got older my friends and I would go home after trick or treating change into a different costume and go out again!

Yes and I loved it. We also use to have a Hallowen party in school. When we went Trick or Treating my mom pulled my youngest brother around in a red flyer wagon. We had so much fun seeing people we knew out and about. We where out til it start getting dark. And we got a lot of candy. Came home and dumped it so it can be inspected for safety. It's not the same in this day and time.

I don't know if our neighborhood was the only one that did this but I grew up in Jersey City in NJ. We feared Halloween as the boys would fill up socks filled with flour & hit us with them or we had these thorny ball shaped pieces that fell from our trees & they'd run by and throw them in our hair. It hurt to get them out or you even had to have your parent cut them out. In addition, many cars were egged. We saw no trick or treaters nor did we dress up. I hated Halloween.

However, after thanksgiving day we had the ragamuffin parade & we dressed up with ragged clothes & put greasepaint on our faces to resemble dirt & went door to door asking "anything for Thanksgiving". I think it came from the depression era but we got many apples with coins in them and other food items but we really just wanted the money. My father hated that day & didn't want me to do it as we had plenty of food at home & didn't need any. I think he was embarrassed but we all did it. Next day, I'd go to Woolworths & spend my funds collected on Christmas gifts for friends & family. Money went far in those days!

I never heard of anyone else having this custom, even other neighborhoods in JC but in my particular neighborhood & close surrounding ones did the same.

despite it sounding horrible, I loved growing up there.

Yes, I remember it well.

I didn't go far but it was a long ago time when children could roam the streets and have a really fun time.

My mother used to make our costumes and she was always creative!! My favorite was a special ghost costume it was amazing!!

What kid doesn't love Halloween? Put on costumes and go all over the neighborhood getting scads of candy. When we went, I remember liking the home made treats the best. Candy Apples or Popcorn Balls wrapped in clear plastic with colorful bows tied to them.

That's pretty tricky! I've never heard of anyone dressing up again in a different costume!

I remember the red flyer wagon we also had one ! That just brought back more memories thanks ! My brother and grandpa made a scooter ( I forget the exact name) but it was made with a board and four wheels and a rope tied on the front wheels to steer the scooter and I remember riding down our hilly street from the top! so much fun ! Another fun thing was Hide and Seek ! anybody remember that game ?

@on the bay - I know it was so weird looking back but we loved doing it. My husband came from a different neighborhood but not too far away & he did it to. It had to be a depression-related custom. We lived in a nice neighborhood & our neighbors were very generous. I had to, eventually, stop as my father really protested; he didn't even like if we ate food in the street. Ice cream yes, hot dog no. There are many books out about weird things & customs in NJ & this must be one of them lol. We still have towns with Blue Laws, my town does but I notice not too much attention is paid by police but other towns are very strict about them.

So many great memories and still of Halloween.

My best friend and I would go around with those large paper grocery bags that would be full by the time we got home, plopping them on the porch. Then like so many we'd dump them out in the living room and our mothers would go through and throw out any that weren't wrapped.

What I didn't like was trying to come up with a costume besides a sheet for a ghost every year lol!

My favorite memories were with my young children. We were so lucky that every city we lived in had houses decorated all over town. My favorite was our neighbor who had a ghost flying down from the tree, witches that cackled, flashing orange lights. An older neighbor made candy apples.

The elementary school had a costume parade-so cute!

In another neighborhood there were elaborate haunted houses and also parties at the community centers, one that I had fun organizing.

My least favorite was a hayride thru the woods with a man using a loud chain saw running behind us and I thought a bit too close! I was so scared, probably more scared then my kids. Too scary to be fun I thought.

These days, one daughter lives in a neighborhood with great outdoor spooky decorations, all kinds. The adults sit out on the curb in chairs and have tables with tricks and treats and take turns taking the little ones around. Before this there is one block that hosts an outdoor Halloween dinner-nuggets, pizza, drinks and cupcakes. Pets come too of course.

I already decorated for Halloween and my grandkids and I have already told spooky stories we made up. My sister and I are quite fond of witches and Halloween is still one of our shared favorite holidays.

Yes!!!! It was so fun, we lived in a neighborhood filled with families with kids, so we would all go in groups and go for blocks with huge trick or treat bags.....

My sister and I would get home and dump all of our candy out on our beds and start trading!!!!!!

Such fun memories!!!!!
