It means so much, especially this year with all going on, to have our holiday recognized. We walked into services last night flanked by police, First Responders and a row of police cars blocking the entrance. We had to show ID and be let in the door. They had a list of those who had called ahead to attend services and name not on that list, no passing through the door. There were too many empty seats when usually the Temple is full and standing room only in the back. Everyone was on edge and kept looking around over their shoulders. There has always been police presence even just for Friday Night services, but this year, there was definitely an air of fear. We've had police nearby for many years, but not in complete uniform, hands near their guns and ready to respond to any threat. The short "party" with traditional foods afterwards was canceled to usher everyone out of the building more quickly. We'll pray from home today and not attend services.

Next week is Yom Kippur and I'm not sure I'm comfortable attending since it's the most religious holiday of the year and usually the Temple has a waiting list and 2 services to accomodate evveryone.

@Shanus I am a Christian and what you described is heartbreaking to me. There is no place for this antisemitism in the USA. My father fought in WW2 and was in a unit called the liberators which went into the camps and rescued the people held there. Those images haunted him the rest of his life. I pray this cycle of intolorence ends for all our sakes.May God bless you.

@Puzzle Piece What you describe has nothing to do with not being jewish. It's more a question of humanity going to hel*l. I did grow up with it in the South. I thought it'd stop, but it rears its ugly head on a regular basis. It's not just jewish people, but it seems this time around and over the last decade, all minority groups. Shameful, sad and frightening.

Don't do like the Jewish Germans during the thirties where they didn't think it was a targeted offense specifically directed at them! History shows where the German's main target was the Jewish people. Everyone and everything else that got caught up was just "sides" to the Jews being the "entree". This attack is coming from the middle to the north if you get my meaning. America is only the second targeted area because this is the second, to Irasel being the first, where Jews have lived and thrived for years since WWII. So if you don't want a German repeat face the facts, this is not about "all minority groups". This is only about the Jewish nation.

@Shanus Here in FL, police have been on alert around synagogues. When I'm out alone, I keep my Star of David out of sight. It's a horrible feeling, and I fear it's only getting worse. 😢

@spabar I checked w/ my FL relatives after services and the same thing there at their Temple. They were passing out ribbons to pin on in support of Israel, but they all turned it down...afraid to display it in public. We haven't seen demonstrations like we did before and hope it's kept quiet for awhile. Our campus and downtown were so full of tents and people, we had to stay away.

When I went to my eye appt. the other day, the gal checking me in said "Oh that's a Jewish name, right?" referring to my last name. I stood still for a few seconds not answering. I've been through this for 70 yrs. in the south. It's enough!!!
