Hurricane Helena Deaths

I just heard that the total death toll attributed to the hurricane is at 89*, with 36 of them being in North Carolina. More will probably be added as flood waters recede.

* Death toll now 93.

I know there are many charities, and the government involved,

but making donations super-easy would be helpful.

Yes it's very sad when people die b/c of a natural disaster but I wonder how many of those people were 'riding it out' and didn't evacuate to save their own lives?

The insurmountable flooding where rescuers had to wait to find the trapped.

Roadways not passable and lack of electricity. Three firefighters died.

They will continue to find more people but with no electricity nor cell service it is a process.

Unfortunately it was said that they expected many fatalities.

@SilleeMee. I've watched hours of video of the North Carolina flood. Area. It's obvious most people were of very modest means, many living in mobile homes, along waterways. They probably didn't have the means or moxey to know to evacuate. Perhaps had no idea of the size or potential of the storm.

@Kachina624 @SilleeMee , I LIVE in western North Carolina. There were no evacuation orders given. Yes, some live modestly but others do not. It's all about the terrain here. When you have that much rain over already saturated ground, the rivers and lakes rise, water flows down the mountains, gusty hurricane winds cause downed trees and power lines, as well as, cell towers. Roads have experienced collapse. Roads have experienced mudslides. Roads have trees covering them. Houses on the mountains and rivers slid away. I'm blessed that my county was spared. No cell service, no 911 but I'm grateful. I haven't been on the roads obviously. I have a feeling the death toll will continue to rise. Prayers ⬆️. 🙏

Please donate now and throughout the winter especially. And look for major charities that already are set up as responders and have boots on the ground.

Of course Red Cross, major religious organizations that speciaize in disaster recovery, local churches and aid groups. It will be ongoing for years, and there are groups helping out now that need your direct contributions. And prayers.

I'm so sorry. I did not realize that evacuation notices were not issued. How terrible and devasting. Everyone, including the weather people, were all taken off guard!

I have been texting my girlfriend in North Carolina. She sent pictures of her property.

She lives on a considerable hill on a wooded lot in North Carolina. They lost 5 well established trees (one was an oak tree) on their property. The tree were at least 50 feet tall and might have been about 50 years old. A river of water passed through their property and knocked the trees down.

It was something they never expected. Living on a hill. You don't expect a river of water to suddenly appear and rush through your property. They can't go anywhere there are so many trees down across the roads and their driveway.

Thy have no electricity so her husband can not use a chainsaw to clear the driveway. Their generator is being used to keep the refrigerator going. They have three large dogs and want to make sure their food is safe.

She just called. They are going to work out a schedule with the generator use. Because it will be forever before roads are cleared. So the chainsaw will be used to clear some of the debris.

I still can not believe the photos of the mess on just her property. And her property is on a considerable hill. The poor people on lower ground.
