ELLA, FRANK AND ELVIS

If you're succumbing to gloom today, or if you're not, two superb music videos to google:

Elvis Presley/ Frank Sinatra Witchcraft/ Love Me Tender

Sinatra admired that Elvis had taken a few years out of his skyrocketing career ( no small sacrifice) to serve in the military-- and when he came back, he had a TV special for him.

In this duet, they sing each other's songs- Frank does "Love Me Tender", and Elvis does "Witchcraft". It's loose and jokey-- fun! Two spectacular entertainers. Elvis's hair has a life of its own..

AND--

Ella Fitzgerald "St. Louis Blues" ( Live in Berlin HD). You have to google the Live in Berlin HD part, so you won't land on one of the other versions she did.

As many songs and appearances of Ella Fitzgerald's that I've adored, I love this appearance she made in Germany in the Sixties. Weaving her magic around "St. Louis Blues", with just a superb trio behind her. Can't imagine her in better voice during that period. She has the assurance of the 'supreme master' in this brief clip.

Sinatra was so good---you could undestand every word he sang. Made some good movies too. If you saw the first "Manchrian Candidate" you already know.

Sinatra was not, in my opinion, the best singer (though he was okay). However, I saw his televised performance in Madison Square Garden and WOW! His charisma & stage presence was off the charts! I then understood his appeal for so many.

He was an excellent actor, for sure!

Ella was my favorite singer of all time ... the mods used to let me post many of her (and Nat Cole) songs on the Preds thread at least weekly ... (I think most of the regulars got sick of me playing them all the time, but I think they liked hearing them, LOL).

I've often thought that Elvis, also in his earlier singing days, had an excellent voice.

Lots of range, etc.

I believe he began singing church related songs, etc.

He was an excellent singer in his many earlier movies, too.

@deeva I wouldn't put him in the same category, either---I would put him in a category all by himself! His voice was unique and beautiful.

I will say, I never cared as much for his rock 'n roll music...much preferred his romantic ballad & gospel performances.

I asked my husband which singer he thought was the Best. He said he would put Elvis at the Top of the list.

I’m thinking maybe because of what one poster said here…he could sing Rock n Roll, Romantic ballads and Church Choir songs.

It was a Huge loss for all of us losing ALL of them. 😔

Agreed, @Cakers3 , each of them had uniquely fabulous performance traits, including that intagible, elusive "star quality" that is rare and so prized.

Keep up the good work with your grandson! Similar story-we started 'inculcating' our son in the greats early on, so that at age five he could announce to his baffled cousins that his favorite singer was Sinatra...

His reply was that they didn't enunciate their words.
