Cowboys at Work

I have seen this my entire life, but it occurred to me that this could be something some of you have never witnessed. These cowboys are sorting cattle. They are sending them down the path to a specific fenced area. The skill of cutting these animals out of the herd and getting them to the correct corral is amazing to watch.

The photos were from Stirling Spencer in Carrizozo, NM.

@On It. My dad, grand father and great grandfather cowboyed but they raised sheep. My grand father was killed, shot in the back, while on a horse, in a dispute with a neighbor over water rights in SW Kansas.

Thiese photos were taken at the end of a roundup. The cattle are out on the range, scattered across the ranch. Just like in the movies, the cowboys ride out, find them, and herd them back to the pens. After the purpose of the roundup is completed, they are returned to the open ranch land.

@On It I have never seen that in person. Only on TV & movies. This is from living my entire life on the east coast. Maybe someday.

I do enjoy watching westerns.

Thanks for posting @On It . I am also an east coaster so the only time I have witnessed real cowboys was when on vacation in the western states. I did my very first horseback ride in Wyoming, I was 54 years old! I was always afraid to get up on one but I finally did it. It was one of my most memorable experiences. I am in awe of cowboys, especially the cute ones

@Kachina624 Jeez, sorry to hear that regarding your grandfather. I'm sure that was a serious issue back in the day and most likely still is.

@Estellee @haddon9 @LindaSal Last year I saw the most beautiful and unexpected roundup. We were driving to Cloudcroft, NM through the Mescalero Reservation. The countryside is pine covered mountains. The Native American cowboys were bringing the cattle down the mountainsides to winter in the lower areas.

One of the men was riding on an exquisite saddle with silver appointments. I wanted a picture badly, but we did not stop or take any photos. We were essentially invited guests traveling through the reservation. I did not want to offend anyone or show any disrespect. I have my memories, and I will never forget.

Seen it? Been there, done that, smelled it, breathed the dust, and cussed when it went really bad.

@On It The 6666 ranch (666ranchdotcom) will conduct its annual horse sale September 27 and 28 this year. It is an experience to see the cowboys and animals in true cowboy tradition. There is no fee to attend this annual event and witness first hand what is involved in this ranching activity. I feel certain you are privy to this annual event but thought I would mention it as others might be interested. This is the ranch where several Taylor Sheridan movies were filmed staring Kevin Costner. A relative of mine, sheriff of the county, provides security along with highway patrol and other law enforcement officers. In attendance are wealthy horse enthusiasts who arrive via private plane to bid on horses along with other horse lovers. It is a festive weekend, and also enlightening to see the cowboy culture alive in Texas. The ranch encompasss the entire county (King County) and includes one town, Guthrie Tx.

Such wonderful pictures. It's nice to see it in actuality vs tv like Bonanza isn't it.

We moved from the Bay Area 26 years ago and it was shocking to see working cowboys here in the metro Denver area. Grateful to be in an area where they can be seen and actually work the plains and ranches.

Cowboy western attire is big here whether you are a real one or not; it's a big departure from SF and it's wonderful.

@rockygems123. I've often been in the mountains in Colorado when we've had to pull over and stop because they were moving big herds of cattle or sheep from one pasture to another. They rent forest service land for summer grazing and there are no fences

My ex was a cowboy from eastern Colorado. Before I met him he used to break quarter horses for a living. Ended up with a bad back from getting bucked once too many times so he quit and went to work behind a desk.

Do you know why they happened to be separating the herd? What criteria did they use? ex: Males/Females,

Interesting you mentioned this. I became sucked into watching an old old 1955 Kirk Douglas, Cowboy movie the other night about herding cattle, and the dreaded coming of what they called "the Wire," (as in "wire fence" often used for land, water, grazing rights, legal, or esp not legal) Dreaded in that ya couldnt see "The Wire" during a Cattle Drive, & it torn up both cattle & herders.

Movie also had Richard Boone (ref; Palladin), and the beautiful Jeanne Crain as the tough, but beautiful, strong, aggressive Cattle Owner, Boss.

Was great! Little bit of romance with a strong woman.

@JoyFilled Warrior. Never knew this grandfather as he died when dad was an infant.

His murderer was tried and acquitted. Shortly thereafter, all jury members got new Model A Ford cars.
