Stressful Afternoon

The aftermath of the June wildfires continues. Two days ago we received 3 of those alerts from the NWS that make an alarm sound warning of a flood. They occurred throughout the afternoon with one being an upgraded in urgency to a flood emergency.

Yesterday we had a flood warning just before the strongest downpour I have ever seen here. The flood gates in the clouds opened dumping small hail and torrential rains that flooded our street causing water to cover the road in a place that I had never known was lower. Water poured off the hillside and rushed down the mountain.

The village closed three major traffic arteries until heavy equipment could be brought in to clear them. This is part of the message we received.

@on the bay @Estellee @LizzieInSRQ @KailaS Thank you for your concern. The good news about flooding in the mountains is that the water does not linger. It is gone quickly. The bad news is it races down the sloped land with tremendous velocity until it reaches a stream or river. The people living below us have an onslaught of water.

Yesterday was an exceptionally difficult situation. Hail was in drafts like snow. Water was flowing where I had never seen it. Sirens were wailing and echoing across the village. I am somewhat stoic in nature, but yesterday shook me. The "climb to safety" instructions were too much. They mean just that. Climb up the canyon walls or the mountainside to get out of harm's way.

We have a 70% chance of thunderstorms today.

@Estellee We are elevated above the valley floor. Yesterday, we could not have used our usual routes to travel. We have a backstreet that would have allowed us to escape if necessary. There was no way I would have left our home unless it was a dire emergency. Today all streets are open.

@On It Wow ! That photo of the water reaching the green roof is really scary- I'm so sorry that you're going through this extreme flooding. Stay safe and keep us posted if you can. I hope that the floods can subside and that there will be less extreme rain in the future.

@On It That must have been absolutely terrifying! I can't even imagine being instructed to climb to safety. Wow, your area has really been hit hard. I am continuing to keep you all in my prayers! Praying for your safety and a return to normalcy for you all.

@On It. Seems like much of the fun has gone out of living in a recreation/vacation area and has been replaced with anxiety. This could go on for years but hopefully we'll never have another monsoon season like this one.

I bet for once, it'll be a relief to get back to Texas this fall.

@On It I too am sorry you and your home village are so ravaged. We tend to think things settle down after a dangerous event, but that just isn't always the case. Please keep us posted. When nature is involved, we realize what true power is.
