A TOASTER THAT LOOKS LIKE ARCHITECTURE

Scott of "Old Curiosity Shop", who deals in antiques and vintage, primarily from the 1920's-30's on to the Fifties, has a few choice pieces of his own. He showed his incredible Art Deco Toaster. I think he said it was a G.E. Hotpoint:

Doesn't it resemble a 1930's building? Or the set of a Fred Astaire movie? Love the leaping gazelle, and the sleek and stepped geometric Art Deco lines...

He actually had to find two of them, since the Bakelite handle on one was missing, and the base on the other was cracked. But somehow he managed to put the good parts together, to re-form one very cool vintage toaster.

I love the clunky looking cord and plug! It looks vaguely familiar, like I may have seen something like that in childhood:

Smeg and others have proved that retro-looking appliances have lasting appeal, but Scott has the real thing, and it still functions.

That is so neat! I remember my grandparents' toaster, which had doors that folded down on each side to place your slice of bread on, then fold it up and plug in. But it wasn't cool looking like this one.

That's a very cool looking toaster but I would be afraid to use that....just look at the cord! I would burn my house down!

Just making toast my smoke alarm (which is too close to the kitchen) can go off.

Fascinating!! I have never seen a toaster QUITE like it!!!❤️ Everything from the ornate detailing, to the unique structure is dazzling!😊

The pristine condition of the cord AND plug lets me know someone COVETED that exceptionally well preserved kitchen treasure!❤️ I wonder if perhaps the plug is a replacement!

Wow, @just bee , those are some epic toasters you found! Each is so interesting in its own right, and in gorgeous condition. I don't think I've ever seen an enamel or porcelain one quite like the one you unearthed, amazing.

@SandySparkles , good point that the condition of cord/plug bespeaks how cherished the toaster was. It looks original to me ( no expert) but I wonder if it was refurbished somehow... Edited to add-- oh, looking at it again-- you could very well be right that the plug part could have been replaced. It still looks "old" but possibly more of a Forties or Fifties replacement for the original plug? Good call!

Absolutely love when deco influenced the design of everyday objects, from fridges, to chairs, to lamps, to sports cars...

I love all the fabulous toasters posted! I remember seeing cords like that in my youth--but never attached to anything so cool-looking.

I have a Black & Decker toaster that looks (to me) very 50's. It's mostly black, with silver accents. But it's a 4-slice, and has several different settings. I actually chose it for it's retro appearance, but it's turned out to be a good toaster!

@Oznell I concur regarding the style of art deco, and its MANY influences!👍 I especially LOVE❤ how it dominated the artistic landscape of that period; particularly in cinema! The sets were sometimes ABSOLUTELY amazing! I love watching classic movies partially for that reason!🥰

@vermint , oh, your toaster sounds fantastic and right up my alley! Along with Art Deco, my other favorite retro style is midcentury modern. I have a few midcentury items that I cherish...

@QVCisFun , and @SandySparkles , thank you for mentioning the Deco influence in film! Ditto, it makes old movies all the more appealing to me.

Apart from the classic Fred and Ginger Art Deco extravaganzas, with those almost unreal Van Nest Polglase sets and art direction, I have a few others I love.

"The Fountainhead" with Gary Cooper and Patricia Neal has to be number one. Their feverish romance plays out against those starkly beautiful rooms. I guess their surrealism is unique in films-- sort of a blend of deco and Art Moderne, a heady Forties' vision of the future!

@Oznell My dream house would be either a mid-century modern--or a Craftsman (how's that for different ends of the spectrum?)!

What I live in is a contemporary style home we built in 1986--so the Mid-mod style actually fits in pretty well. I just have a couple things, though.

My toaster is the 4-slice version of this one--couldn't find a pic of the 4-slice.
