DH shared this pic this morning. I frequently hear them at night and find it relaxing falling asleep to their "whooo, whooo". It was a kick to find out that he/they actually avail themselves to the bird bath. Totally cool!

I reguarly hear an owl in some large pine trees near the house, but never see them.

It just reminds me to make sure the little feral cat that hangs around my house is safe in an outdoor house at night.

Nice pic. Love the owl.

I know the critter in our yard at night is a possum. DH found a baby possum sleeping in a bucket on our patio he throws stuff in for our compost pile.

He makes bacon on his Pit Boss. DH throws paper towels in the trash with bacon grease on it the possum chews it up in little pieces. LOL!!! Must love bacon like we do.

We have to watch what we put in our trash can on the patio.

We cook on the grill a lot so no way of getting rid of the possums. If they smell food they are going to show up.

we are in suburbia and had owls years ago. was quiet for few years, then had 2 last Spring.

we only hear them in late winter/early spring.

they are just awesome!

but around here, its cut-cut-cut trees down. so i am sure they are moving on to better pastures.

our neighbor up the street just cut down a birch tree. other neighbor a big maple and a dying blue spruce.

ugh, our street looks terrible.

we will have to take down our blue spruce soon, its dying. when we had a arborist come to look at our maple, he said they do not like our climate, too hot. they like Oregon and the like...

but i will replace with something native to our area that can withstand this heat and more mild winters.....

I have a wooded area behind my house and often hear woodpeckers but there aren't pines so I seldom hear owls.

Unfortunately, Trees of Heaven are trying to take over. They have large seed pods and saplings are coming up everywhere.

Being new to Pittsburg I was stunned when I saw a HUGE white owl sitting quietly in a densely forested area right near the road beside my apartment complex!

Came home and looked it up. It was a snowy white owl!

Newer "nature"story...

A skunk (or skunks) must be in the vents on my floor.

I'm reading that when people smoke weed it can smell exactly the same?

I will need to do something and my neighbor has it in her place too.

oh, and also I have discovered that I have mice!

@LTT1 I've haven't smelled "weed" in many, many years...but to my recollection, it has a sweet-ish smell--doesn't smell like skunk. But Skunk is a hard to describe smell, VERY strong and completely obnoxious. When fresh, it will take your breath away!

Our "road to town" is apparently a "skunk crossing". In the spring, some will get hit by cars, and oh, the smell! And that's before they start to decompose. It lasts forever, because even the buzzards won't touch them, lol!

I have never been nor will I ever be a smeller of "weed!" LOL

And what I did smell coming from other rooms in college (wayyyy back when) did have a sweet smell...unless they were burning incense to cover the smell.

But my DD tells me that it smells exactly like skunk... I just find that so hard to believe

but the young lady (she is of Indian heritage and also like me very naive in some ways) swears it's weed!

And her apt is more drastically affected than mine!

And it seems to happen on weekends...so that fits.

We have both gone to mgmt and complained...to no avail so far.

They said they would send maintenance up to "smell" the hallway. [gee thx!]
They told her that if it is WEED, they cannot interfere with people's lifestyles.

In PA as in the entire nation, pot is still illegal unless its medical.

Even then, I read that there is a law prohibiting it from being used in areas that would affect others.

So this story is not finished yet!
