REGISTERING FOR THE MILITARY DRAFT/NOT POLITICAL

NO POLITICAL COMMENTS PLEASE

I have a grandson who recently turned 18 y.o. I recalled reading that he has to register with the U.S. Govt for the military draft.

He tells me he heard nothing about it and was not advised by any official in or out of his school to register.

Does anyone have any experience with having an 18 y.o. register for the military draft? Thank you!

'Registering For Draft' Isn't the Same Thing as 'Getting Drafted'

Under current U.S. law, anyone who was born a man and is currently between the ages of 18 and 26 is eligible and required to register for the draft. Once you turn 26, you are out of the draft.

The U.S. military has not used that list of names to call people up for military service (i.e., drafted them) since the Vietnam War, but in the case that a draft is reinstated, the U.S. needs a list of everyone eligible for service to determine who will actually be called to serve. That list is maintained by the Selective Service System and theoretically contains every man eligible for service, between the ages of 18-25. When you register for the draft, you put your name on the U.S. government's list. That's it.

@Etoile308 I was curious regarding consequences of NOT registering for the draft and, also, if the age range was

18-26 whether it would be acceptable to wait a few months or years to register.

I was concerned about penalties.

So what happened to the females? My husband (long before he was my husband) joined the Marines at 17 and that's what he wanted to do. Haven't heard of any one doing that in years.

Back in my day, notification to apply was included prior to applying for student aid. Also notification was given when applying for a driver's license. And I remember seening the posters at the post office.

Also I know of the (JROTC) Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps program that prepare high school students and that includes females also.

Don't know of any of my nephews friends who joined.

@Sage04 My grandson is going into college and, he, too, was never told anything about this. If I didn't bring the subject up, he wouldn't have been aware of it.

I did go to the Selective Service website and they are very clear that there are possible criminal penalties for not registering; also some job opportunities and/or student loans that might be denied him now and in the future.

I'll discuss this with my daughter (his mother) and hear what she has to say; however, I think he should register now that he's aware that it is the law.

P.S. There are exemptions from registering; however, he does not fall into any of those categories.

@pdlinda haven't heard about this in years. Never stopped anyone I know from getting student loans.

I would love to hear what your daughter has to say. Never heard this discused before. That means a whole lot of students would be penalized. I don't think so.

@Sage04 My daughter will probably say: "Whatever you think, mom" LOL...she's very busy and this topic just appeared "out of the blue" because my grandson just turned 18.

I posted because I believed that a lot of people participate on this board and I was hoping a few would respond with accounts of what happened to someone he/she knew who registered and was granted certain rewards OR someone who DID'NT REGISTER and certain sanctions that were placed on him.

@pdlinda I hope you are not scaring your grandson lol. Just let him enjoy college.

But that's a very interesting question. If my husband was around, he would know the answer to this question.

Now I have a question. Hope someone here would know the answer. Going through my husband's thing, I came across the flag (he had a Military funeral) what do I do with it?. Also a beautiful blanket? that has the Marines in huge letters and what they stand for. It's very difficult looking at them but they were things that he loved. I still don't know what I should do with them. I just thought of something. I have a wall in the living room, should I attach it to the wall instead of a painting?

@pdlinda didn't mean to take this in a different direction but it's all Military.

@pdlinda - My son had to do this five years ago. He did it on-line. There was something about if he didn't do it he couldn't use the college scholarship he had. He isn't home to ask the why part but I know for sure he did it on-line.

@Sage04 There are a couple of things you can do with the flag. For my dad's I got a case (ordered it online) it came with his name etc on an engraved ID so I could display it. You can contact your local VA and they will pick it up. You can chose to fly it. Some cemeteries will take them. But without a doubt your local VA is the best place to contact if you wish to donate them. And God bless your husband for his service. My son did early sign up when graduated H.S. He just got back to his home base in Washington state from his third deployment to the Middle East.

@Sage04 When my father & one of my brothers had a military funeral. My mother was given a case to place the folded flags in. The cases was already engraved. She hangs my father's case over the front door & my brother's case over the back door.

The blankets she uses as a furniture & bed throws for her dog. The other stuff she spread it out among my brothers.

My father was a Tuskegee Airmen & my brother was in the Navy.

@Mz iMac I'm sure the case is there also but just seeing the flag really affected me. This is the first time I'm seeing them. I will find a special place for it also.

@eadu4 it's so emmotional. He was one proud Marine. I could still hear him singing the Marine song "from the halls of Montezuma" all I could do is laugh when he started to sing and even now.
