Car Insurance

I live in New York State where we pay for our car insurance every 6 months ( it renews). I received my bill today and thought it was rather high, it was an increase of $200 since I paid in February. I called to ask why it was so high, she told me they hadn't raised their rates since COVID, and also just like everything else it costs more. I am annoyed, I have been with them for 3 years and have never put in a claim. I am currently with State Farm and am going to Geico tomorrow to see if they can give me a better quote.

@Jordan2 call Geico directly. Was also looking for insurance last week and I am still getting calls and text at least every five minutes from different agents. Of course I don't answer.

Was with Geico for years and left them, now I'm back with them again.

Same thing here. We sought quotes from brokers and other companies who all came in higher!!! Thus, we are staying with Farmers.

Your insurance company applied for a rate increase with your State Insurance Commisioner and it was approved.

Most likely the company(ies) you're approaching will have also requested the same. It will reflect in you quote(s).

I just left Progressive after 9-10 years. It was a raise in premiums all the time. No accidents, no violations and never a decrease. I was given a quote by State Farm for double the coverage including car rental, and towing and it is 32.00 a month less expensive. I had Geico for many years before I went to Progressive. They were a good insurance company. Now I am curious and will be calling them tomorrow. Can you let us know what company you decide to use? Good luck and ty

Sounds like you may need to take the time to do some research, or call an insurance broker to do the work for you or see what they recommend.

I live in CA, and tonight I had my car insurance statement in my mail, so this is timely for me, too.

Get this ... On my statement for the next 6 months, I had a $22 Covid CREDIT on my bill .... I can't make sense of it. I'm not complaining, but would like to know why.

We have one car insured with State Farm in NYC and we went from paying $235 to $337 per month. We have a bundled deal with home owners insurance and various discounts for a garage, anti lock brakes, etc.

My husband called today to see what could be lowered and it wasn't much. He's going to go to the office to review coverage levels when he's off. We would change companies but the discount we get on the home owners insurance with the car insurance is significant.

So far, I have not had an increase in my auto insurance, but I'm expecting one. With the ridiculous price of cars/car parts/labor now it only makes sense that all insurance rates will rise. Same with home owners insurance. I'm expecting that to jump in price too based on the ridiculous housing market.

@Jordan2 Same here ~ with State Farm forever never a claim filed and sadly have had a few increases. I've never had an increase as large as yours though ~ I probably wouldn't survive that much. I will say they have advised me weeks in advance of any increase. Good luck!

I was with Liberty Mutual for over 30 years So were my parents, even longer. On the rare occassion I'd call to ask a question, they always thanked me for being a loyal customer. Never made a claim, home or auto all those years until 2016 when we moved into a new house and had a major issue/problem. Not only did they deny coverage, when our policy came up for renewal, it went up over $1k! Switched to AllState. One reason was that they had a local office. But every year our insurance went up A LOT. They gave me the same reason year after year, "your zip code had the largest jump in price." After that I went to an insurance broker. Not only did our rates go down, we got better and more coverage. She said when when dealing with Liberty Mutual, AllState, Farmers....etc (any that you see a lot of commericials on TV) that you're paying for those commercials. I would recommend looking at an insurance broker.

In NJ all companies asked for and received increases on personal auto and homeowners. The latest notice we received about 2 weeks ago was informing us that they have asked for an increase on personal umbrella policies too.

Some companies are less expensive but it's such an insignificant amount that it's not worth the aggravation of switching. For us on our auto insurance it would have been $5 a month.

Dont forget: rates can change not only to violations and accidents but also due to

Age bracket and gender you fall into. You can age into an increase just like teens do.
Also credit rating (FICO score)

I have Travelers Insurance, used to have Nationwide.

Insurance is up everywhere. I belong to a huge local Facebook group and there have been many posts on the subject lately.

I have State Farm and have been with them since I got my driver's license at 16. I am now 68.

My car, auto & umbrella have all gone up and have had no accidents or claims. I called them to ask why and I was told because of inflation, things costs much more to replace. I did get quotes from other companies and they were higher. I decided just to stay with Farmers.

Things have gone up tremendously: new cars, car repairs, building supplies, contractor services, marketing commercials, and all the claims brought on by hurricane, flooding and wildfire damages ( aka climate change ).

Some insurance companies are narrowing their targeted business segments, I.e., ours isn't renewing and insurance policies for apartment buildings with more than 4-5 units. They are focusing on smaller apartment buildings with newer construction dates.

As for car insurance, some companies will give a discount for taking an in person or online driver course ( 4-8 hours ). Check with your agent to see if your company is included. This was recommended in this month's AARP magazine.

I've been driving for 50+ years.

I have never caused an accident.
I have never filed a claim with my auto insurance.
I have never had a speeding ticket.
I have never had any kind of violation while driving.
I haven't driven over 3,000 miles in a year in the last decade. (I just sold my 2006 with 48,000 miles on it because I inherited a 2012 with 26,000 miles on it.)

U.S. public transit is pathetic compared to the rest of the evolved world (except for a few U.S. cities). I live along a route of what I call the world's worst bus system, which I used for work for many years.

Every kind of insurance company pools insureds into groups. Everyone's premiums go toward paying claims and profit. If claims increase, profits go down, and premiums go up. But it hurts the good drivers in the group.

@jlkz Thank you. My husband and I have been taking the defensive driving class every 3 years for over 25 years now, It really does help to lower the premium.

I live in NY state and car insurance is constantly increasing. The number of carjacking, accidents, car thefts, unlicensed driving, and DWIs and drugged driving is increasing exponentially.

NY gives out drivers licences and sells cars to anyone. Add the many new unlicensed drivers around. It is dangerous out there. No wonder the car insurance companies are raising prices.

The new relaxed drug laws. no IDs and records for new group of drivers add to the ridiculous laws in NY state that make driving here more hazardous.
