Defensive Driving Courses

So I will be doing the course online as my certificate expired. I live in New York State and checked out DMV recommendations of various websites offering the course. The one I usually had used wants $39.99 when most others charge between $19.99-$24.95. Are they pretty much all the same, I'm not sure which one to go with? Has anyone taken the course recently and can recommend one they liked?

I seem to remember, during the Stone Age, that taking, passing Driver's Ed would reduce one's Car Insurance rates. Does this course reduce anybody's Car Ins, any age? or such? TIA

No it's not a requirement and not a way for lawmakers to make money.

If a person chooses to take the course they will get a discount on their auto insurance for a certain period of time.

In NJ it's good for three years.

So, this is a completely different situation, but after 2 totaled cars, I took my daughter to West VA to the BSR Accident Avoidance school. These people also teach drivers for dignitaries that have to be able to get their passenger away from people trying to kill them. Of couse, she didn't get that course, LOL. They had some classroom instruction which they allowed the parents to sit in on, and then they took them out on the track for the driving part. They would have them drive toward some pylons and at the last second tell them which direction to swerve to avoid, but still had to maintain control of the car. They also took them on a circular track which they used a sprinkler system on to keep it wet and did some driving there. That was in a different area and I wasn't able to watch that.

A bit overkill? Maybe, but I don't regret it.

Re the insurance rates, my insurance would give a discount for taking Driver's Ed at school, but not for a private program. I had very good rates and they had awarded me a "we can't deny you coverage" letter right around the time of her 1st accident. However, of course, that doesn't mean they can't raise your rates. So, I ended up signing something to say I wouldn't allow her to drive my car when I got my Jeep after her 2nd accident.

@Jordan2 , is this a follow up from your State Farm question the other day? My husband called around the same time and they sent him a link to the defensive driving course with no fee.

@Jordan2 I have done a few of them. To me they are easy. They are all about the same. I think mine was 19.99. I keep it in my glove compartment so I can whip it out incase I get stopped. LOL I can't remember the last time I was stopped, but it sounds good.

@ahoymate You don't have to but you can save 10% off your insurance and 4 points on your license if you need it.

@Tori3569 I am actually leaving State Farm, they never offered me a free course.

@monicakm ??? You are talking about license renewals and yes, it can be done online until the eye exam is required.

They are talking about defensive/safety courses which are not required but can be taken to dismiss a ticket, receive an insurance discount, or just for general information.

In order to get the ticket dismissed, however, the court will determine if you are eligible when you receive your summons. I believe DUI tickets cannot be dismissed.

@monicakm. I used to get a discount on my insurance in Texas after taking the employer-sponsored defensive driving course.

It has nothing to do with renewing your driver's license.

@CelticCrafter I think it's 3 years here also in Georgia. A lot of people are doing it because of the discount.

@proudlyfromNJ you get a discount but i don't know if the discount is the same with each Insurance Company.

@CelticCrafter Somebody who gets a deal from the state to administer these, or a state agency who hires people makes money. People who oversee it make money. People who provide space for it make money, and on and on. Oddly a lot of state license agents in some states happen to be relatives of state officials. . .
