EZ Pass Scam

This afternoon I got a text message from EZ pass saying my account was over and I needed to pay now or I would be charged $800. It looked official.

I "almost" clicked on the link, then started thinking a fee of $800 sounded a little unusual. And I have automatic replenishment.

I logged on to my EZ Pass account, and after going through steps to verify I'm human, I found my account is fine.

There was also a huge notice on the home page about the scam.

I added myself to the list of people who reported it to the government.

@beach-mom This has been going on in WA state as well and been well publicized on local news.

@AZfem Easy to find on the 'net. It's a system of payment of tolls on the freeways.

Electronic toll-road sticker that automatically pays your toll from your account, and allows you to drive thru the turnpike without stopping.

We live very near a toll bridge. You used to be able to go through a cash payment lane if you didn't have an EZ pass. Now if you don't have one a camera will take a picture of your license and you will get billed by mail.

We've had one for a long time!

Thank you for explaining. We have no toll roads out here. Have driven all over the west & SW & not encountered one (not that there might not be one lurking somewhere!)

Thank goodness you took the necessary steps to check it out. I'm really so sick of these scams. I've not gotten that one (yet) but twice last week got the USPS undeliverable mail and need my correct address... blah blah blah. Also seems like telemarketing calls are on the rise again.

@beach-mom Thank you for the warning! I just told my hubby to be aware that might be coming next. We just got an "official" email from "usps" informing us they "needed" our address to deliver a package. Yep another scam! I reported and deleted it. I hope no one ever clicks anything in a moment of panic or forgetfulness... that's what these scammers are hoping we do!

Exactly! If USPS or UPS can't deliver a package they return to sender. Also if they don't have your addresses how the heck do they get your email or phone number?

Wow! Lucky you! Here in NJ we do have them. The Garden State Parkway, Atlantic City Expressway, Holland and Lincoln tunnels to NYC and the NJ Turnpike! We've always had them!😅

Have driven in CO but not encountered one yet. But we stupidly go on roads like the million dollar highway so no wonder!

Yes I know the east has a lot of them. I'm from PA & was lost in NJ all night long once & ended up in NYC! A trip to remember.

This isn't new. I got that "notice" over a month ago. Since I haven't been up in the Bay area for a few years, it was a quick Delete.

Here in Florida its called Sun Pass.

I received this same text scam 3 weeks ago.

I knew it was because ive not had a Sun Pass account since they sent back what was left in my accpuntit as my car that had a transponder on it was totaled 3 year ago. Besides that , ive not traveled on a toll rd in about 4 years.

I got one from Florida turnpike "scam" about a month ago...it would have been after we got home much earlier.

A few days ago I got one for my state....the #'s looked funny, e.g., $8.60 or an $860 dollar fine.

I blocked the telephone # on the message and deleted it.

As soon as I saw the subject, I knew it was a scam, I cancelled my EZ Pass about six years ago.
