Target to stop taking paper checks

I'm really surprised they still take them. I'm betting a lot of cashiers don't know what to do with them.

Good for Target. So many people write bad checks and that is a big loss for retailers.

But perhaps paper checks cannot be verified as quickly as plastic?

The way of the world. Like most things today, things are changed and you don't have a say in it. I get tired of having to do things their way and not mine. I told DH ages ago that one day soon you won't be able to write checks for anything. They will force you to use ccs or debit. Target is getting rather picky about different things. I guess business is so good there that they don't need to worry about what the customer wants.

One more way in which the criminals get a say in what we have to put up with. There are so many people who write bad checks, without thinking twice, and we the consumers have to pay. I've not written paper checks in a long time but don't like that they won't allow them.

When I worked in retail, 20 years ago, bad checks were a frequent problem.

Even when the check was approved, some people knew how to make the checks bounce. You could always count on a check written certain times of the day/week to bounce. But the check was approved so you had to accept it.

I am surprised any retail store still accepts checks at the registers.

@Kachina624 Do you mean their Target credit card bill? That would be the bank that handles that and not Target. Just like Synchrony handles QVC cc payments.

The news story in The Minneapolis Star Tribune indicates that this policy change is for in-store purchases at the register.

You will still be able to pay your credit card bill statement with a mailed check.

The article also states that only 1% of payments at retail checkout and restaurants are now made with a paper check.

Every once in awhile I will see someone writing a check out at the grocery store to pay for their goods, holds up the line but then again maybe that was their only source to pay at the time.

I started carrying my checkbook again!

I also started asking if places of business charge for using a CC.

I had a "convenience fee" slipped in on my bill when I visited a new hair salon (nothing posted about CC use fee and no one said a word when I paid with my CC) and I will never have that happen again!

On large purchases I ask if there is a discount for cash.

Many places will give 10 percent.

And that's why I started carrying my checkbook!

I am still a check writer, for some bills, but I haven't written a check at a store, hairdresser or anything like that in so long that I don't remember the last time I did.

My mother insisted on writing checks also. However, her hand writing was so bad that the bank scanners could NEVER decipher the amount. We always had to put in the amount manually at the ATM and the bank put a hold on the deposit until they could have a human verify it.

I always felt awful when we went shopping together because she held up the line, both because of the time it takes to write the check and verify her id, the fact that most clerks didn't know how to process them, and they sometimes had to be approved.

Combine that with the bad checks ... and I am not surprised at all that stores don't want to accept checks.

Whole Foods and Aldi stopped accepting personal paper checks to pay at the cashier as well.

Holding up the line is a loss of time & money for the store. Plus the percentage of people who still do it is less & less each year. Analysts predict more stores will do away with paper checks in the very near future.

I can't even remember the last time I wrote a check?? I never write checks for bills anymore and use my debit/credit card.

Overlooking the attitude here, it's better to put the groceries on a credit card that earns cash back, rewards, etc and just pay it off each month.
