I am reading a book on our Bullying Culture, and I read this paragraph that spoke to me. "We have nearly lost our fundamental respect for human beings and our anchoring boundaries of acceptable behavior towards others. We are obsessively occupied with drawing the dividing line between 'Us' and 'Them'. We treat strangers and newcomers with derision and disrespect. We have little self-control and even less emotional maturity. The smallest mistake opens the floodgates to an emotional free-for-all tirade. Animals are treated with more respect for their emotional welfare than human beings these days." I agree with the author, do you?

No. Not in real life. Maybe on chat boards the flaming etc. ...but not real life.

Lack of respect toward teachers, who normally would intercept bullies and keep order on the school premises. But now-a-days, many teachers don't have the respect from kids and parents, I'm guessing. So everything is a mess, safety-wise. We didn't have any bullying in our public school, but we were raised to respect teachers and authority. Our worst 'nightmare' would be to be called into the Principal's office.

Nope.

What happened to parenting?

Teachers are responsible. The police. Social Workers. School counselors. Intervention specialists. Case workers.Security guards and metal detectors in schools. Every other person is responsible.

What happened to parents?

In the beginning stage of the internet people had to pay to go online and more to post.

When it opened up and it was free for anyone to post that was when I saw the beginning of people being mean to each other.

Maybe we need to return to where everyone has to pay to use the internet.

If you post you have to pay to send a message. Most people would not pay just to talk mean to strangers.

In my whole world...my life....the ONLY place I have others talking mean to me is RIGHT HERE IN THIS FORUM.

No where else in the whole world do I deal with such mean people. That is saying something loud and clear about this forum.

I think in general we have lost respect and civility towards each other. Look at our politicians, and on almost every forum you can find people responding in rude, racists, foul mouthed responses, if it is allowed. I do think we contribute to the bullying environment where the guy with the loudest voice can intimidate others, and bystanders don't jump in. We don't have that community feeling I felt as a child, where every parent looked out for other's children when they were out of doors. We don't accept newcomers without wondering what they are all about, are they trolls, what game are they playing. We are suspicious of most everyone. It is often safer to communicate on-line than to face strangers in the real world.

I think if you look at the history of politics in this country it has always been volitile. Yes, online communications are rife with ugliness but that is due to the anonymity in my opinion. In real life I find most people to be friendly and civil. I have a home based business and have met so many great folks.

I keep an eye out for my neighbors kids. (Well, I used to they are almost grown now!) But I still keep an eye out in case they have car trouble or whatever. I talk to my neighbors and pet their dogs. We look out for each other.

Yes, I agree with the statement. I have noticed so much less civility in the past couple of years. It is disturbing. Never mind chat rooms and blogs. They feed themselves.

me too--people waiting for someone to make a mistake or purposefully "misunderstand" then you get called out - a,by a lot of posters---it's humiliating

ITA - the nasty personal digs. I've been to other boards where there's disagreement, but it's easier for people to just agree to disagree. Around here it's like not one thing can be let to slip and EVERYTHING is taken very personally and responded to accordingly. There's also a prevalent tag team here and they seem to show up in bunches and just attack attack attack one poster mercilessly.

in my RL, I'm appreciated and loved--it's shocking that we (Americans would be rude to newcomers and strangers--I even smile at homeless--why be mean?
