This week the New York Historical Society is showing a rarely seen duo side by side:

A rare printing of The Declaration of Independence alongside the little known "Declaration of Dependence."

I was completely unaware of this document, signed in November 1776 by 500+ New Yorkers proclaiming loyalty to the British Monarchy.

Fascinating piece of American history and a new document to me! The exhibit is entitled "Our History of Discord."

Also, an extremely rare actual piece of this statue of King George III, toppled in July 1776 at Bowling Green in lower Manhattan will be displayed, preserved by the Historical Society. Through July 7th.

Isn't this an interesting "turn of events"!
It seems we have always been a country of independent thinkers!

And aren't we lucky to live in a country where this is allowed!

I got curious and googled

Ended up on a site called

"All Things Liberty"

and found this:

"The 242-year-old Declaration of Dependence is owned by the New-York Historical Society Library. Having only seen the on line version of this 242-year-old document,[2] I can describe it as a large sheet which has the wishes of the signers written on the top half followed below by eight columns with approximately thirty-five signatures in each column. The left most column has perhaps ten signatures worn away. There follows three smaller pages of signatures, in four columns on each page. The fourth column on the last page has been torn away. What appear to be water marks distort and disfigure other signatures on these three pages."

This is a reproduction of the King George statue, on display at the Museum of the American Revolution.

The horse tail, now on display, was found in a swamp in Wilton, Connecticut and purchased by the Historical Society in 1868. The remainder of the lead statue ( gilded with gold) was likely converted to musket balls.

One of my professors at university said that there were good men on both sides of the War of Independence and that they all thought they were right.

Loyalty to the Crown, as opposed to independence as a new country, and getting out from under the yoke of British rule.

Lucky that the painting was saved.

Art describes the history of human kind.

I'm one who doesn't like the destruction of some statues such as this one........maybe keep them in a building to be seen at a later date in time.

I'm the one who appreciates Rick Steves Travel episodes.......Each country's art, architecture, and statues describe what went on in the past.

If all/most of those churches, buildings, statues, artwork, etc. were completely destroyed, we wouldn't have much perspective.

We do learn from history. Hopefully.

Yes, history keeps repeating itself.

Over and over again.

I guess it's in human's DNA.

It sometimes skips generations, and then it just 'pops up' all over again.

We are lucky that at this time the British are our alley, working together for peace.

Totally unrelated to the subject matter, but I really admire the penmanship of many of the signers. I've always had a thing for nice handwriting.
