High school graduation gift

It's been a while since we've had anyone in the family graduate high school. My nephew (my DH's sister's son) is graduating but we're not able to attend in person. We're sending a gift and thought $200 in cash and a $50 gift card to Target would be ok. They live in NY and my DH and his sister are pretty close. I'd like some opinions on if this gift is appropriate or should we consider something else? Thanks.

Give what you feel is best. For me, unless I was close to my nephew, I wouldn't be this generous.

@NYC2AZ I hope you are sending a check and not cash in the mail. Too easily stolen. I think $200 is more than generous but if that's what you are OK with then fine. I personally would send a Visa gift card to be used *anywhere*. The nephew may not be a Target shopper. . I think Visa is a better choice. It can be used wherever he likes.

@NYC2AZ You are very generous. Even with my grandchildren, I would not give this much for a high school

graduation. Visa would be a good choice for a gift card. It can be used at a place of his choice. Personally, I would just go with a check as a gift.

I have 5 children, 6 grand children and 8 great grand children.

We don't have a month without birthdays. I am constantly buying gifts. Just this month, we had five birthdays.

Nowdays I would not expect a thank you card but be happy if you got one If it will bother you if you don't I would opt out of buying a gift.

I see no reason to include a gift card in any amount with the money.

@NYC2AZ-- Your gift sounds generous and thoughtful, but I suggest something that he can also keep as a memory of your thoughtfulness. Perhaps putting the money/Visa card in a Carver Dan box or something similar? I have done this several times and it always adds something special to a gift for a significant occasion .

I send AmEx gift cards via USPS. What do you suggest? UPS/FedEx?

@Kachina624 Thank you -- I knew that he passed away, but some of his products are still available at QVC. I do not know if there is a future for the business, so this is a good time to buy the boxes..

Thank you, everyone, for the feedback. Our nephew is really a very sweet and thoughtful young man but he's still a teenage boy so he may not think about things like a thank you note. I'm sure his mother will remind him, though. She's going all out for a graduation party (this is her oldest son so he's the first to graduate) and I know my husband feels a little guilty we can't be there in person. We will get to watch the ceremony online, though, so that's cool...at least we'll get to see some part of it.

I too agree with a visa for the $50.00. Many of these students need new electronics like tablets for college.

@NYC2AZ I think that the money will be a welcome gift. And your nephew will have no trouble spending it.

BUT as a Target gift card, I just know from my son. My son has not been in a Target store since grade school, when he went shopping with me. My son has a collection of gift cards to stores where he will never shop.

He gets these cards from people at work and relatives for his birthday or Christmas. He has cards for hundreds of dollars to WaWa, ShopRite,even $50 to Amazon and about 10 other retailers. I feel bad the people meant well. But he will never use these cards.

Cash is best...or a check. Many graduates are saving spending money for their first year of college.

$200 is very generous. He should be thrilled. Kids do not want memento gifts. Times have changed.

@NYC2AZ I like your original idea. Obviously you and your husband feel very supportive and that's wonderful. The larger gfit can go toward an expense and the giftcard for something he might just want for himself. Target is fine, as would be Amazon. Most everyone can find something they want at either choice.

unless there is something you KNOW he loves and needs, i think cash or a check or a gift card (or any combination of these) is the perfect gift. everyone can always use cash, whether they spend it or save it.

@NYC2AZ Kids must be taught to give thanks for gifts. I actually have an album full of little thank you and other notes give and sent to me by my grands over the years! My son and DIL taught them well
