The fires have created one set of overwhelming issues and now the mayor has issued a video statement that catastrophic flooding is expected this weekend. A tropical system is expected to cause an enormous amount of rain. Burn scars are like concrete. The soil is baked and hardened. There is no vegetation to slow the water. It all rushes off the slopes with tremendous velocity bringing debris and ash. The mayor further stated the last time there was a rain event this catastrophic was with Hurricane Dolly.

FEMA is sending in specialized units. It appears the Colorado ones will be searching for victims. The Phoenix group was shown on screenshots from a video. It is a large caravan of equipment.

@On It. What a mess it must be in Ruidoso! I just heard on KOB that 500 firefighters that just arrived may have to leave due to danger to them by possible flash flooding. It's been raining lightly but steadily all morning. Fire is zero percent contained.

This tropical system may stick around until the first of July. It's so humid in Albuquerque today, I'm very uncomfortable. Most unusual, the dewpoint is 60°. It's not raining here, cloudy so maybe later.

@On It What a catastrophe your beautiful area has had and it's not stopping. I'm so sorry for everyone and animal affected.
I'm glad you had another home in Texas. Now there's a storm and flooding there. My grandson is in Houston.

This is hard to wrap one's mind around, who has never experienced such environmental destruction. It feels like a horror movie, only it's real.

It's terribly disturbing to hear and read about. Many of us are familiar with, and fond of the area.

There's little any of us can do, other than those fighting on the scene, except for holding out hope that this will end soon. Calling all Angel's...

The Albuquerque Fire Rescue (AFR) Wildland Division is mobilizing resources to Ruidoso, NM, to support firefighting efforts for the South Fork and Salt fires.
