Upbeat News from Our Wildfires

Some sighs of relief and upbeat stories relating to the overwhelming destruction of the South Fork fire and the Salt fire will be posted on this thread. The chronological events documenting the fire are under the post "Update: Forest Fire is Advancing!"

One of our herds of horses was photographed yesterday afternoon.

This herd has claimed this area as its own. We have 4 or 5 herds. They have been here for years. Social media is trying to say they were chased here by the fire. Not true! This area is close to the river. They are walking to the Cree Meadows Golf Course to enjoy the grass and water hazards.

As 8000 people were evacuating, they were told they could take pets to the Humane Society Shelter for temporary care. The Salt Fire began to make a run towards the area where the shelter is located. The shelter had to be evacuated. Staff and volunteers safely transported all to the Roswell Fair grounds to a pet shelter being supervised by Bernallio County.

A herd of deer has returned to a burned out area. They do have survival instincts that must have served them well.

This is a food truck from Alto. He must have evacuated with it to Capitan, NM, home of Smokey Bear. He is parked at the Shell gas station.

Much is being reported about Ruidoso. Our next door neighbors are the Mescalero Apache. They have lost a great deal as well.

@On It I'm going to ask a dumb question. Do these horses just walk around town by themselves? Are they wild? I'm in the Midwest and the only time I see a horse is on a trail or a farm.

@SaveTheTurtles That is not a dumb question. The horses are in herds. A dominant stallion is in charge of each herd. He controls their movements and makes the decisions about their movements. They are wild in the sense no one owns them. No one provides them food or shelter. They roam freely through the mountains and the village.

This is the stallion for the herd that comes by our house.
