I'd be happy to never see another air pillow. They fill up landfills and waterways and cause countless problems for animals, sea creatures, finding clean water, and people. Paper can be recycled.

The same goes for factory farms. I live in a state with a lot of them and runoff, spills, and dumps have resulted in the dirtiest waterways in the country. Add plastic and it's a disaster.

I've never found the air pillows to be an issue. They pop easily and the plastic is very thin and lightweight. It wasn't that long ago that the environmentalists wanted us to use less paper as paper comes from forests and they were against deforestation. Now using paper by the ton is apparently fine.

NJ's ban on disposable plastic bags has created more trouble than it's solved. Any delivery now comes in a reusable bag (that you have to pay for) and if you have a lot of stuff delivered, you end up with dozens or even hundreds of reusable bags that never get reused. Each of those reusable bags are heavier, use more plastic, and take even longer to break down. According to one study cited by CNN, a cotton bag needs to be reused 7,100 times to make it as environmentally friendly as a disposable plastic bag. NJ came up with a reusable bag recycling program, but was soon swamped with bags. They just never die. The old disposable bags were often reused for dog waste, used kitty litter, garbage, and other similar uses while the new ones just pile up and there's not much to do with them.

@Sakuya wrote:
I remember the switch. I didn't understand why plastic was supposed to be better and I was very young.

The paper bag/plastic bag argument largely came down to preference. For me, plastic was far better. The handles let you carry more than one bag at a time. Paper bags would typically need to be supported from the bottom. Try to carry one from the top and the bag would often tear and the bag and contents would hit the ground. Paper bags also had issues with moisture. Rain or a wet item in the bag could lead to the bag turning to mush in your hands. Plastic bags were viewed as better for the environment initially as they could be recycled or used to dispose of dog/cat waste and no trees were cut down to make the bags.

Most major stores using plastic bags had recycling bins where you could drop them off and then they'd be turned into things like Trex decking for your porch or deck or other recycled products. Paper bags were often not recycled by many communities where newspaper and cardboard were the only paperstock they'd accept for recycling. You could either compost them or throw them away. They weren't very usable for pet waste, garbage, or the like. You'd tend to use some other plastic bag lying around (bread wrapper for example) for those issues.

A few months before NJ's ban went into place, I bought twelve reusable plastic bags from Amazon. They've been great. Each one holds fifty pounds of stuff and they're about as thin and lightweight as the old disposable bags. I wasn't sure how well they'd hold up, but so far, so good.
