Parents to job interviews?

Just saw on the news that. many GenZ-ers are now taking a parent with them to job interviews. I find this ridiiculous!

Would you ever hire an applicant if they brought their mommy or daddy with them?

Gen Z seems to be more helpless than I first imagined.

I highly doubt Gen Z, as a whole, are bringing their parents to job interviews. Both my children have jobs that require their hiring and neither have ever had this happen. The media loves denigrating youth in America. A few outliers may bring mom and dad but I don't judge an entire generation of kids by a few. It would be like saying baby boomers were all hippies, smoking weed and living in their parents basement.😳

There was a thread about this a month or so ago and I could not believe this is happening. Parents not just driving them but actually wanting to sit with them. Shocked the heck out of me. What are these adult/children going to do when mama and daddy pass on?

The survey under discussion reported 25% of Gen Z respondents brought a parent to an interview. It doesn't indicate if they merely sat in a waiting room or actually sat in!

As a manager, I would not view positively an applicant who needed the presence of a parent.

Doesn't seem like much of an actually scientific review:

In April, ResumeTemplates.com surveyed 1,428 U.S. based Gen Zers (ages 18 to 27) who looked for a job within the past year to understand how much they rely on their parents when job searching.

Study highlights:

70% of Gen Zers ask their parents for help in the job search process
Of those who found a job, 83% credit success to parents
25% of Gen Zers brought their parents to interviews
16% say their parents submitted job applications for them
1 in 10 had their parents write their resume

We had one that not only came, but demanded to see our company financials to understand how his daughter's paycheck would be calculated.

She never got one since she was never hired.

Maybe high schools / maybe even colleges should offer required classes re: Job Interviews, Resume Preparation, and how to fill out Employment Applications.

Not being sarcastic, just a suggestion.

I recall learning those things in a high school business class.

Oh, even learning how to fill out our Income Tax forms, which I continued to do myself for many, many years.

Based on everything else noted in this study, I think the percentage must have been higher than 1 in 10. More like 9 out of 10, maybe?

My son is GenZ. I did drive him to a couple interviews because he was not yet driving. I also gave him general advice. I parked the car and went for a walk while he was interviewing. No one with the company he was interviewing with knew I brought him. I wouldn't want that for my son.

@ROMARY - The high school my son went to has a mandatory class for sophomores that covers all those things. The university he went to also had several offerings (not entire classes) about interviewing and resumes.

Oh, I remember my teacher suggested that we (students) go on as many job interviews as possible.

'Just for practice' (in her words).

She said that, eventually, a good job will be ours. And that we would be used to being in a job interview and have more confidence, etc.

I even remember her name!

I wish they'd do a study, with transcripts or audio recordings, of the conversations in the hiring manager's office, among the Company employees tasked with hiring, AFTER they interview someone who brought Mommy in to the interview.

Even with the descriptive language and breaks for laughter redacted, it would still be priceless.

Sheesh.

@beckyb1012 With the ones I know, I'd say Papaw and Meemaw would be the ones to accompany them. I know of several grandparents who go to EVERY thing their teen age grandkids do. And I do mean every event. One drives over an hour both ways and has since they had events.

I would have been mortified as a teen if grandma and grandpa hung around like that. So I'm sure they'd be delighted to take the little ones to job interviews. After college.

Those things used to be taught in HS; now, it isn't unusual to see a parent call or go into a college professor's office to ask for their student to be given a re-take on an exam they failed. When I was college, I would have been mortified if either of my parents had done that!

A little more detail from the survey about those who had a parent sit in for the interview. I can't imagine the thoughts of a manager who heard a parent answer the question!

(Although I wonder why they let them sit in at all.)

"For those who had a parent come to an in-person interview, 37% say that their parent accompanied them to the office, 26% say their parent physically sat in the interview room, and 18% say their parent introduced themselves to the manager.

Additionally, 7% say their parents answered questions."

I don't think it matters whether the parent sits in the waiting room or goes into the interview with the applicant; the fact they are in the office with them is not a good look. Dropping them off due to a car being in the shop, etc is not an issue at all. Fillng out apps and composing resumes is not something a parent should be doing. The kid needs to figure it out and ask a question if need be.

I remember when I was looking for jobs it never occurred to me to ask my parents for any help. i am sure they would have obliged, but if it was creating my resume or filling out apps ( back then it would have probably doing it with pen and paper; the olden days ha ha) they would have told me to do it myself, but they would probably proof it.

A loooong time ago..when I had an interview for a job close to home..I had to travel to the main office in Manhattan NY..I was scared silly..I had never traveled the NYC subway for more than 2 stations..I will say my wonderful Dad went with me..I was so afraid of getting lost...He sat in the lobby of the skyscraper that I had to go to and read his newspaper..I came down with a big smile and took Dad to lunch..

I got the job.. and where I was going to work was 3 blocks from my house!!

My daughter is a gen-zer and my boys are millennial. They would die of shame if I would do that, which I would not. I work with some gen-zer's and many days I have to wonder!😯

I also find it ridiculous to bring a parent....why? Is the parent going to do the work? Or do they need Mommy & daddy for moral support? If that's the case how will they ever manage in a job where they have a boss to deal with instead of their parents.

If I were the person giving the interview, I would let the applicant know just why I have turned them down. They need a dose of the real world.
