Your FAVORITE Or WORST Job And Why?

I have ALWAYS loved flowers, and worked in a flower shop for a time as a teenager.😊 Learning to care for the flowers and make the BEAUTIFUL❤ arrangements is something I still appreciate to this day! I have had several good jobs since that time; a few that I LOVED❤, but working at the flower shop was my favorite!😁

What is your favorite or worst job?

I loved all my different positions in my career in the school system. However, I LOVED accounting. I may be of the rare breed, but I love numbers and I worked in payroll. Every day, all day, was like solving a puzzle. I enjoyed it immensely but I missed the contact with kids and staff so eventually transferred back into the schools.

I did not like working at Kaiser. Oh geez, that was the worst. I would set up appointments for patients and every day, ALL day, people would yell and be so rude if I couldn't get them an appointment. The thing was, I had no control. The system is ran according to doctor's schedules, if a doctor would not work extra then there was nothing we could do. I did feel for these people, they were not feeling well and would take it out on us. Tough job.

Another great post ! Before I became a nurse I worked as a nurses aide at a nursing home and although rewarding in helping those patients that were confused ( one old gentleman thought he was at a hotel and when he couldn't get out of the building he would tell us "I will remember you at tipping time !") My favorite job as a nurse was working in the Hospital newborn nursery for 9 years. Loved caring for the babies and being in the delivery room seeing the love and smiles on the parents faces with the birth of their child.

When my kids were young & me going through a divorce 40 years ago I was a waitress at a downtown restaurant working a late night shift so I could be with the kids during the day. Loved the job, the tips & customers but management was very touchy feely and if one wanted to keep their job, it was expected even though not wanted.

Favorite: Working in my family's Ben Franklin 5&10 in the 50s and 60s. Started helping out when I was around 5, and got paid

Worst: As an aide in a private nursing home, in the owner's home, with no apparent regulations. I only lasted 2 days.

@cjm61 Welcome!🥰 WOW! You bring up a perspective I think people are not always mindful of. I have even seen people get loud and unruly IN the doctor's office when things did not go their way! More so now than EVER! I wish people would stop and think that kindness will get them a lot further than rudeness, and that there is a PERSON on the other end that has feelings just as they do!😊 Treat others as YOU would want to be treated!❤

Fave was first. Worked in a restaurant, checking hats and coats. Nice coworkers, great tips, met lots of boys.

Worse was an office job. The boss was a major letch. I was young and not used to that sorta behavior. Tried to do my job and ignore the jerk.

I haven't had many jobs in my working years. Tended to stay put. I'll start with the worst first:

McDonalds when I was a teenager. I thought it would be fun at the register taking orders. But, they put me on the deep fryer making french fries. I lasted 1 day.

I loved selling yellow pages advertising for the bulk of my career back in it's heyday. I then went into collections for them. I loved that too. I spent 26 years doing this until it was sold in 2012 and I was eligible to retire.

My current job is in purchasing which I've been doing since 2012. I LOVE this job the most. Hey, I get to shop and buy stuff all day everyday. Doesn't get much better than that!

I'm going to retire for real at the end of the year and am looking forward to the next chapter!

@SandySparkles I don't think many people realize when speaking to customer service/representative, it is just a person with limited control and doing their best job with the tools they are given.

My sister-in-law worked at Kaiser also but at the reception desk. We always debated who got the worst abuse. I felt that people were far more likely to yell and scream on the phone than they would in person. I still feel this way, which has enabled me to be much more compassionate towards CS.

In High School I worked at a Movie Theatre and it was so fun!!!! It was such a good group of people and our managers were so fun and young.

It was the best! I also had a job at a Travel Agency inside our Mall back in the 80's...That was really fun as well, and working in the Mall was great!

Loved: In the late 90s, I worked in ad serving tech. It was all very new, and everyone was trying to monetize their websites. Many TV actors had websites (Geocities) for their fans because there was no real social media; some were super hands-on, so we worked with them personally and did lots of networking. At that point in my life, it was really fun. Now, I don't really care if clients are famous or not.

Hated: I was an assistant buyer in a department store. I liked the job and actually loved playing with numbers (buying is all planning and trend analysis). I hated my boss, and she felt the same about me. Also, our three-time married VP was having affairs with three of the buyers. I had a professional relationship with him, but if you went into his office and shut the door, you'd get the evils from his affair partners. It was very messy.

@colleena Welcome!🥰 Awwww! That is AWFUL!😮 Things were just SO different for women then, but THANKFULLY because of laws protecting people in the workplace these days, less women are subjected to that type of harassment and there are CONSEQUENCES if they are! Sadly, men are sometimes victims also. I am REALLY sorry that was your experience, but glad it is far behind you!❤

My first job right after high school was working at a car wash that still had full service gas pumps. It was a time of sidewalls and tires were scrubbed with a whitening agent before going into the wash. Went home dead dog tired every single day. I was the youngest and the only girl. I had a whole bunch of big brothers that I always wanted growing up. I am still in contact with some of them today. I loved it.

I have worked in 4 different agencies for the state of MD for 51 years...the best job is the one I have now. While it can be draining at times, I love it and the main reason I won't retire...what am I going to do all day?? I'm in week one of my vacation and already bored. And I worked hard for my Masters so not ready to let it go...

The worse job I had was before I got college degrees. I worked in an agency as clerical staff and was eaten alive by a female supervisor. I was 20 years old and had not yet found my fight back voice. I stayed the longest (one year) of all the folks she went through. I was back on the transfer list to move to another agency 8 weeks after I started...

My favorite job was teaching. My Master's degree is in reading. I loved working with little kids and the other teachers in my district. It was a very rewarding career. I taught for 22years.
Prior to teaching, I worked as a graphic artist. I enjoyed that as well, but after 13 years, I wanted a change and teaching was the best choice.
The worst job was the 6 months before I went to college. I was just out of high school ....and truthfully very immature and not ready to go at that time. So...took a job as a shampoo girl for a local beauty shop. That was an eye opener... But at that time, I needed a job and some income. By January I was enrolled in college.

My favorite-

In public schools working with special needs and ED (emotionally disturbed) children, sometimes one on one, sometimes in a "regular" class, sometimes with my own class.

It all started from working in a school for autistic children.

I had watched the movie "Run Wild Run Free" when I was 16 and knew that is what I wanted to do. It was about an autistic boy. I will never forget these children. I just always felt I could relate to them. They can have super sensitivity and awareness of many things around them.

Worst-I had many waitress jobs I loved when younger but one night was the worst. I lost it and shouted across the room for them not to yell at me and call me honey! I shouted my name isn't honey!-it got pretty roudy in the late night hours! All of a sudden there was silence. I guess they were all shocked!

I couldn't decide which group was worse-the ones who drank too much or the ones who got high. These were group regulars every night. The diner restaurant was on the main street of a university.

We did have some good times together but sometimes it just got to be too much!

"Those were the days my friend, we thought they'd never end..."

We should do a thread on waitress stories! The stories we could tell!

Or funny stories from our various multiple jobs.

Now funny, and ironic-I call people I love- honey

@LyndaGee Welcome!🥰 I am SO sorry that you too, were subjected to a harassment! You are the third poster thus far to mention it, and that is most telling of the DISRESPECTFUL, criminal treatment women unfortunately had to endure then! I know it still happens sometimes, but at least there are now harsh punishments in place, and it is much EASIER to report!😊

I am happy that you had a restaurant job that you enjoyed!😊
