And When do these Cicada's go back underground ?

Right now I'm sitting in my living room. the TV is on and I can still hear them outside across the street in the park !!

Yesterday I was leaving my apartment to pick up my grandson from school and another neighbor came out and we tried to have a conversation about 6 ft apart and could barely hear each other from the noise across the street ! They are so loud and while taking my walk later they were on the roadside dead and alive. At my daughter's home they are all over her driveway, on the garage door and you can barely hear each other talk !

Ok, I'm done, just had to speak on these little creatures. Who else is feeling the rath of cicadas !

@Goodie2shoes : I totally understand. I live in Georgia and it is bad. I only go out for doctor appointments. I am slow getting in the car but the noise is loud, makes me feel like something from The Twilight Zone.

We never get the big broods here on MD eastern shore. Just the seasonal cicadas. I kinda wish we did. I love the sound and think it's amazing.

I'm in the metro-DC area and haven't seen any yet, We've certainly seen them in some years gone by. I can recall many years ago when I was outside talking with a neighbor. I went to rest my hand on a telephone phone and quickly realized that it was covered with cicadas.

But actually, I don't mind them too much, since their stay is only temporary. (I'm thinking about a month?)

Maybe I can speak to the "big broods" here and have them contact the MD eastern shore broods for direction there.

New York isn't being visited by them this time but we have been in the past, and I have heard them in my apartment in the middle of noisy NYC! The only reason I know what they sound like is because I grew up in the suburbs. I recall some of the birds in our backyard grew fat on the cicada buffet.

When I lived in Tx they sure were loud.

Just went outside. All I hear is birds & wind.

When we were sitting out back a few days ago I heard them just before dark. I can't hear them in the house.

This spring, some cicadas will be turned into sex-crazed zombies, thanks to a strange fungus called Massospora cicadina.

Massospora cicadina is a fungal pathogen that infects only 13 and 17 year periodical cicadas. Infection results in a "plug" of spores that replaces the end of the cicada's abdomen while it is still alive, leading to infertility, disease transmission, and eventual death of the cicada.

@SouthernBee - I knew you lived down there. It's so strange. I had read reports that Cobb County was supposed to be especially hard hit with them. Nothing at all.

@gidgetgh : About 3 weeks ago DH went outside and heard them but couldn't determine the sound. I reminded him about all the news articles. He stated this year was bad.

My trucker daughter drove thru MO a few days ago; killed quite a few cicadas on her windshield, and sent me a sound video of them singing when she was ready to go to bed. I do believe their life cycle is about 30 days.

WV is not one of the states that will see cicadas this year.

I've read about 6 weeks.

To me they sound like the hand phasers on Star Trek. I found a sound track of Start Trek sounds and went through them because I knew they sounded like something on Star Trek. I played it for DH and he though it was a recording of the cicadas .

I'm kinda enjoying them. I've moved a few to trees so they won't get stepped on and some came up in the greenhouse, so I released them, throwing them into the air to fly off.

We had them in our yard when we lived in south Jersey. Thank goodness I have never seen them here in my area of SE PA!

Wow, after reading all the posts, I realize I'm in the minority! I actually like the sound!

I have never seen them, don't know what they even look like, and never even thought about their "mating habits!" Lol.

I live by a river and marsh pond, and here in CT those Cicadas are the first sign, after winter is finally passing, that lets us know spring is coming.

At night when I have my back sliders open and sitting in the living room, the sound of them outside is not too loud, and relaxing.

But I get where when they are very loud they could annoy some!

We have had some frogs that are pretty loud out there!

Not soon enough.

There is a double batch coming and So not looking forward to it.

I love to sit outside and read or go for walks. I guess my exercise is going to continue indoors this year when they are here.

I have seen people in the nighborhood wrap their trees already. I do not know why but I guess it keeps some of these bugs off them.
