FIRE PINK Wildflower For Hummingbirds

I've found lots of these Beautiful flowers growing around the house and woods. Soon, there will be a sea of them.😃

At first glance, they appear to only have 5 petals, but they actually have 10.😃

These hard to find flowers are native to the Eastern US except for New England. Mainly found in rocky open woodlands. Notice the soil where I found them.

However, they can be planted anywhere. They do well in dry soil, so they're often used as border flowers or in rock gardens or hummingbird gardens.

They're a perennial herb that blooms from early spring through the summer. Animal resistant and a vital pollinator. Both hummingbirds feed on their nectar and many birds on their seeds.

Heck no, not yet! Ugh!

If I had to depend on finding them I'd starve lol!😂

Im glad I keep taking my phone with me though, to get these beautiful pics of flowers.

Id bet these would do well where you live.

These are such BEAUTIFUL❤ flowers!!! The saturation of color is incredible! Fire is the PERFECT name for these beauties!!!😄

I have always been surprised they're called Fire Pink since they appear so very red. I agree it is a great name though!💝

@cheriere When you do see a sea of them, if you can, please take a distance picture so we all can see the beauty of so many! That would be gorgeous seeing a field of these beauties. (Of course if you are out when they are) Good luck finding your morels. Right about now, yes, you would be starving. ***Mental note not to use you as my guide for surviving in the wild***

LOL 😂 that's for sure about starving for mushrooms! But hey, we might just make it on all the herbaceous flowers I've found! Some can be safely eaten root, stem, and flower! I'm learning so much this year on my hunts at least,😃❤️

I will try o get a good shot of the Fire Pinks. I had an okay one, but the file was too big to be accepted here.😔

I'm looking forward to posting more flowers I'm finding. I have several I've taken pics of. I'm just trying to find more information that the little bit of mountain knowledge I have about them lol.

They've always been one of my favorites too. I'm at least learning more about each flower I'm getting pics of than what little bit I knew before. I had no idea how important in pollination these were. I also didn't know all the beautiful birds that are attracted to them for seeds.

These should be indigenous to your neck of the woods.

I read that they can be purchased by roots or seeds and can live practically anywhere.

At least I'm getting nice pics and learning..even if I'm starving for hickory chickens lol.😃

@cheriere Thanks! After I saw your picture, I looked them up and saw you can buy seeds and roots. I don't think I will, however. I don't have lots of space, and I'm afraid they would become invasive. I've had that happen before (lesser celendine), and am still dealing with it. I think I'd prefer to find them in nature, as you do.

Yes, I'm really not certain how they might spread. I was glad to read that they can be planted in rock gardens. Some of our forum friends who live out west may be able to use them for adding color.😃❤️

I'm having a lot better luck with finding the pretty, than I am mushrooms lol. I'm happy to be getting nice pics and learning new things about these flowers and herbs I've grown up around.

@cheriere Your pictures of wild flora are beautiful. I love seeing all the flowers that bloom here in Spring in the Northeast but I have never hiked in the South and I have never seen the lovely flowers that you have photographed.

The Fire Pink flowers must be such a great attraction for the Hummingbirds, they are so attracted to red.

Your pictures would be beautiful printed on notecards.

I hope that you find your mushrooms. We have mushrooms that grow on our lawn after heavy rain, in warm weather. I wouldn't dare to eat them.

We get Fiddle Heads in Spring and I like to cook them. Do you get Fiddle Heads, where you live?

The only mushrooms I'd dare eat that I find are what we call Hickory Chickens. Technically, they're called morel mushrooms. There's no mistaking these lol.

These might be what in your area are referred to as Fiddle Heads, how interesting. I posted a thread called Hickory Chickens, but here's a pic of them. So far, I haven't had any luck. I'd starve if I depended on them this year lol. This is from the internet.
