Totally Grossed Out

Something, I am assuming a hawk, nailed a rattlesnake in our front yard sometime in the morning or last evening, but we didn't notice anything when we went out on our walk. When we came home, as is our custom, we give the yard a once over, especially now that some cacti are blooming. All of a sudden hubby stops and stares hard at something on the yard.

There was a severed head of a rattlesnake, the rattler is also severed in another part of the yard and then there's a chunk of the body in another part. Totally unexpected and weird. We are assuming it was a recent kill because of the flies.

OMG, the smell was foul! Flies buzzing, it was gross.
I took a couple of pics for our neighbor, and he said most likely hawk.

Sounds like Arizona. i am in southeast Arizona, one day one of my dogs deposited a snake head at my feet. I have seen hawks fly overhead carrying snakes! We have a couple owls living close. They can really make a mess in our yard whil enjoying their dinner. Ugh!!

Yuck! I hate for anything to die, but in the case of a rattlesnake I'd be glad.
Last summer, we had a similar situation except it turned out to be a large black snake. I noticed it in the front yard under a tree. This is gross too, but it had actually laid an egg. I didn't even know they laid eggs.

I took a few pictures too.

Better than getting bitten by one. A big coyotee killed a deer in our yard once. I looked out the window early in the morning & it was still eating the deer. It looked nervous because dawn was coming on & he ran away when it got lighter out. Such is nature.

ICK. I was helping a friend work in her yard years ago, we left for a quick lunch, came back and there was a bird with it's head off in one of the outdoor lamps....freaked us out!

Yuck! That would've freaked me out too! Wonder what on earth could've done that?

It is just horrible what coyotes do to a deer, a few years ago ,they killed one next to my house , they tear apart that deer ,remove its insides.

Predators hunt and eat, that's how it is. Living out in the country we have adjusted.

But coyotes kill cats,and dogs, many cats go missing here.

That's always on my mind too when taking Ruby out at night and before sunrise. I always try and make sure she's on the leash, although she has slipped out quickly a few times. There's a lot of coyotes here too.

I've gone out on my morning walk and have seen severed rabbit legs and parts of rattlesnakes. Coyotes and bobcats are frequent sightings in my Arizona neighborhood.

When I lived near the hills I used to see wildcat and coyote eyes glowing when it was still dark and I was leaving for work.

In my Arizona neighborhood we see raccoons, coyotes and roadrunners. We have a gang of 6 raccoons who regularly visit looking for kitty food and water.

@Pezzie Rattlesnake in your yard!!! I would never leave my house! In fact, I will stay in MI where the biggest issue is snow!!

Black snakes keep rodents and poisonous snakes away.

@SportyShorty07 Most of them do. When my daughter took horseback riding lessons there were sometimes rattlesnakes in the field near the horses. I used to run across it to pick her up lol. I don't like any snakes but IMO most rattlesnakes are so ugly.

@colliemom4 Wow- snakes are everywhere! Were the horses afraid of the rattlesnakes? Rattle snakes are ugly and scary- I've never seen one in person, but the youtube videos are enough to creep me out . That's really cool that your daughter took horseback riding lessons- did she wear the equestrian boots and the blazers that people wear in the movies?
