Housewarming

I recently moved. Hopefully the last one of my life. So I have everything I can imagine and then some. My son in law's aunt asked me when are you having a housewarming party. I said I hadn't thought about it.

Was that an odd thing to ask, or is it just me.

@May5. Do people still have housewarming? I haven't heard about anyone having one for years. Maybe they're done by young people and I just don't have contact with any. I never even thought about it when I moved into my forever home.

I moved into a new house at the very end of 2021. It never occurred to me to have a housewarming party.

I downsized. Please don't give me more stuff.

Most likely it depends on your group of friends and relatives.

If it's something that they'd like to do and you're open to it sounds like fun.

That's my forever home I'll try my best to forestall it, but, there will come a time when we all have to go unless we die in our own home.

People do have house warmings but people who are downsizing usually don't. We don't want more stuff, we want to eliminate some of what we already have. It was not an odd thing to ask. I would have answered truthfully.

You can have a house warming party without presents. I did. Everyone knew I had everything because I'm the one they came to when they needed anything for their kitchens and anything else. We had a great time and it lasted 2 days.

Th only housewarming parties I have heard about in years are for newlyweds. The only thing I usually send is flowers.

@Sage04 What fun! I have several friends that have had housewarmings with no gifts. Most ask us to make a donation to your favorite charity instead of a gift. We had a great time!

I would never have a housewarming party. That's just me.

I might have a gathering of friends or family as some point in time, perhaps at a holiday.

In my family, we each take turns hosting holidays. The host fixes the entree and the rest of us bring everything else. No one has to do all the work.

I've lived in 2 houses. Never had a house warming party. Eight years ago when we moved across country into the house we're living in now for my husbands new job, he said he was asked by people he worked with about a house warming party. I didn't think much of it, I just didn't do it.

I don't think housewarming needs to be "bring me a gift ", but more of a come celebrate with me in my new home. It is a way for all your friends to see your new house.

@May5 In my opinion, no, I don't think it was an odd thing to ask. I just think it is not really called a Housewarming Party any longer. My 30+ year daughter and her husband purchased a home a couple years ago. They had a big party and had all their friends and family over. It was never referred to as a Housewarming, just a get-together to come see their home.

No gifts were presented. Just because a person has a housewarming, or similar named party, doesn't mean they are asking for gifts. I think they just want everyone to see their new place and share their excitement.

I think a housewarming can just be a way for your friends and family to see your new home, if you have downsized then say Please No Gifts..You can say that either way. Just have some food and socialize....

.I only had one Housewarming and it was with our very 1st home, and we were younger and it was fun...

Not everyone likes that type of thing, so its not a necessity, but rather if you want to do it or not.. We did not do our own, it was my sister and sister in law that threw it-they provided all the food and just asked for a date that would work for us...

But again it was our 1st home!

I never had a house warming for either of the 2 houses in my life -am in an apartment now----but I don't need anything even if I did move again. . My neice just moved into a new house--and will prob get her a little something--a plant or little special food item that I made--when I see the place. But I usually bring something like that for the host/hostess any way. Have never been invited to a house warming either.

Maybe she meant will you be hosting a party to share your new home with family and friends. Having a house warming thrown for you would be a little silly since you are down sizing.
