HOW DO YOU RECYCLE GLASS ANYTHING?

I have some old candle jars and glass bottles I want to recycle.

If I just toss them into the recycling bin, they will shatter.

I was thinking I'd place them in a plastic produce bag so when the glass breaks, it's still all together.

Any suggestions? TIA!

They're going to break once they get dumped into the garbage truck.

Around here they don't want plastic bags mixed in.

I would wrap them in newspaper or brown paper bags and put them in a box if you have one.

Our recycling is a bit strict where we are. Though I think we can throw old candle jars in the bin but they have to be cleaned out first. That can be a job in itself. We recycle as much as we possibly can but it surprises me how many things are still allowed in the regular trash. Breaking doesn't matter as anything glass will most likely break when being dumped in the truck.

@Tinkrbl44 We are no longer allowed to recycle glass as part of home pick-up as of a few months ago, and I do not know why, but can still take it to our local recycling centers where glass is accepted!🥰

All glass, cans, paper and flattened cardboard can go in one recycle bin in our town. They specifically state Do Not place recyclables in plastic bags. They will not pick up the bin if they see plastic bags. It gums up the conveyor belts at the facility. Just place them in your bin.

Go to your town's recycle website or call sanitation. There are different rules for glass recycling depending where you live. It is possible they want you to throw it in the regular garbage.

we have mixed recycling curb pickup weekly. you cannot put in plastic bags or yard waste or paper containers with food products on them, including pizza boxes. they give us a list every year of what is or isnt acceptable.

i throw glass in my recycling bin, but if you are worried about it breaking, put it into a paper bag. mine doesnt get broken, but i dont know what happens once it gets into the truck.

@Tinkrbl44 Our county gives us one bin in which we put both plastic and glass. If you put a plastic bag around your glass and put that in the bin, the whole thing goes one of 2 ways -- into the general garbage or you carry it all back into your house.

We have separate bings for recycling paper.

Again the rules are easy and clear.

Wherever you live - follow the rules set by whoever is responsible for the recycling. It's likely some taxing authority because few private recyclers can afford to collect what they can't sell and most of the countries that loved our trash now have too much of their own to want ours.

Can't anymore here. They used to accept glass, but you had to take it to locations around town that had receptacles for them or take them to the recycler itself which I did before they provided the receptacles. This was for the safety of the people emptying the bins which we physically carried out to the street.

A couple of years ago they changed recyclers and we got a big roll-out bin which they never touch, but the rules became much more strict. Only small-mouth plastics 1 & 2 are now allowed. All cardboard must fit inside the bin. No glass, period. No plastic bags, although we can take them to Publix. Not sure if they actually get recycled there or not.

All trash and recycling in our area ends up in the same facility. I think they stopped recycling because it got to be to expensive so now even though there are two bins and two different trucks to pick the stuff up it all ends up in the same place.

I gently place any glass items in my recycle. It's never broken before the recycle guys pick it up and dump it in the truck. If it's broken glass, I wrap that in newspaper sleeves, several thick, and put that in with my regular trash,

Most of the recycling companies want the glass to be empty and clean, and then just placed in your recycling bin. I don't think it matters if they break or not because someone or something will sort through those things on conveyer belts once they get to the recycling plant. If you have candle jars that are still full of the wax, those should probably go in the regular trash...at least that's what I'm told by my company.

We recycle glass in my area but I wouldn't toss the glass items in the bin I would set them in it so as not to break them before they dump them into the truck.

Glass goes in our city recycle can. You have to throw stuff in there pretty hard to have it shatter.

Don't know what is allowed, call your City Hall and ask them. But, I wanted to add that eons ago, if that type of item was put in trash cans, that they have a big sign on them so no one puts their hands and arms in to shove trash down. One guy got cuts on his arms up to his elbows. This was when they came and picked up the trash cans and emptied them, but think of the possibilites now of what could happen.

Will they accept them where you turn in your bottles or cans at a grocery store?

I always fear if put in the trash, that glass would sheer off and fall in the streets where neighborhood people walked their dogs.

@LindaSal Same here. Very strict about recycling. We can't even put food in our trash. We cput food stuffs that are compostable into compostable bags abd deposited into special bins for food stuff. I try to recycle as much as possible but it is frustrating how many plastics are not recyclable. They want us to remove tape from cardboard boxes too as the tape isn't recyclable except for some companies like Amazon who use special,paper tape that is recyclable. I have plenty of time but you can be sure most people won't take the time to remove tape from the boxes before they throw them into the recycle bins.

We have to drive our trash and recycle 30 miles to the nearest site. One disadvantage of living in "the woods." We also have to separate by categories, paper, corrugated cardboard, glass, metal, and aluminum. All this goes into separate big bins and they deal with breakage. I really don't mind sorting. Oh, I forgot plastic is also accepted. The grocery bags go to Walmart, theirs and other stores.
