Extreme mail delays, Atlanta

I live near Atlanta, Georgia. There is a new Post Office Facility that has a massive amount of mail undelivered. The local news flew a helicopter over it and there are trailers full of mail that has not been delivered. Not only a few trailers mind you, but trailer after trailer like a parking lot. The news has interviewed people whose business is affected because there are packages that were sent that are still sitting at the facility. They interviewed a lady who sent her wedding invitations, again not delivered but sitting at the facility. I know a woman personally who paid a bill and she was contacted that it was overdue. There is not an explaination forecoming to tell why it is backed up. So, if you plan to mail a package to the Atlanta area please choose a different carrier.

Thanks for the information @mormel20. I'm in NC and a lot of my mail and packages are routed through Atlanta. Packages especially seem to get delayed, even those from Amazon.

Because of Amazon now sends so much through UPS to USPS for last mile delivery I order a lot less from them. Walmart+ is competitive and I always get my order in two to three days via FedEx.

They closed a consolidation center in Duluth. Trying to do more with less is not something any government agency should attempt.

Seems like our poor post office has nearly been whittled down to nothing. It's a shame too.

@mormel20 - I live in Marietta and have read the same things you have. So far, so good for me.

Though my sister (in Tucker) is still waiting for the Valentine I mailed her in 2022, 2 years ago, LOL.

I wonder why Biden doesn't push the Board of Governors to get DeJoy out. He's destroying USPS by choking the major sort facilities.

I was reading online that a woman in Georgia was expecting an order of eggs to be hatched into chicks. She said the window of time has past so they will never hatch. I can just imagine the smell that will be coming from this.

We were in the local PO the other day. At least half a dozen people on line and one worker. USPS should be privatized. The government is failing on this.

@kaydee50, what are you willing to give up to have USPS privatized? Daily delivery to your home no matter where you live? Local post offices?

How long do you think it would take to pass an amendment to the Constitution which gives only Congress the ability to establish post offices and postal routes?

How long do you think it would take a private entity to match the current postal facilities for receiving, sorting and delivering mail, including packages?

FYI (as of 2022):

On average, the Postal Service processes 50,227 address changes each day. On average, the Postal Service adds 5,844 new addresses to the delivery network each day.

On average, the Postal Service processes and delivers 23.8 million packages each day.

On average, the Postal Service processes 4,877 pieces of mail each second; 292,628 pieces of mail each minute.

The Postal Service processed and delivered an average of 421.4 M mail pieces daily in 2022.

Employs nearly 750 million individuals.

I have lived in countries where all mail was picked up at a PO. No home delivery at all. We were just fine with that system.

Maybe it is time do pare down daily home deliveries. Seems to be a little excessive.

There are times when consolidation of parallel functions is very productive; however, what DeJoy was brought in to do did nothing but bring down performance. The consolidations caused backups of mail and packages and could have led to mail-in ballots backlog.

Further backlogs still remain thanks to dismantling sorting machine in distribution centers.

Yes, prices for services have gone up. Workers have been putting heart and soul into getting the mail through despite having one arm tied behind their backs. I can't imagine them wanting to work as long as they can beyond the earliest option to take retirement or just quit and find a more lucrative position where they are appreciated.

When incompetents are slipped into leadership positions for which they have no background, serious problems ensue from deteriorating performance to plummeting morale.

The other day I got my mail along with mail belonging to two other families. The service here has really declined. I mailed in my payment to a lawn service and they never received it. I don't know what can be done but I sure wish someone had an answer.

I think most of the problems occurred when their budget was gutted a few years back.

Well, here in California they seem to deliver a lot of calif mail through Texas. A few times I have ordered items with a 4 days delivery. Then 12 days later it arrives. We incevstigated after 5 th day. Seems it sat in Los Angeles for 3 days then went to Texas, and then another facility in Texas then Los Angeles then Sacramento, then Oakland then San Jose and then med near Silicon Valley Another time it went from Reno to Las Vegas to Arizona to Texas and then to me in No Cal. What is this? A way to keep post offices busy? I don't get it. Sigh.

We have had terrible USPS delivery for severl years now; the closest postal facility was turned into a training center so our mail delivery is by rookies...it may come at 4pm or 11pm; maybe only a couple of days per week and if we are lucky, it goes to the correct address. Everyone just drops off the wrong mail to the right house now. I have long thought privatizing would be the answer, but it seems it would be much more expensive. Taxpayers should be getting their money's worth....but we aren't right now.

@mormel20 I've lived in the Snellville for years and haven't had any problems with the mail delivery. I've moved twice within this area and the two Post Offices remain the same.

Hope they can figure out a way to make it better for everyone.

I’m in Southern California, and I rarely have issues with any of the delivery methods: mail, UPS, FedEx, Amazon. I consider myself fortunate.

The only time I know there will be delays is when something has to go through the mail distribution center in Detroit.
