The only reason we have smart phones is because it's all that Verizon offers.

We went looking to upgrade last week because we were going to get rid of the house phone if the price to upgrade was less than or equal to what it costs for the house phone.

The cost of new phones are astronomical and it would have cost us close to $80 a month more on the wireless plan.

Needless to say we walked out. Probably two of the few people that have walked out of a Verizon store without something new in their hands.

Eventually we will have to do it and will cross that bridge when we get to it.

We just received a notification that our MAJOR telephone land line co.is trying to stop service in our huge area. Too much line maintenance they say. We live in the hills and cell service is spotty so we will be out of touch I guess. We are quickly becoming a 3rd world country.

AT&T notified the state of California that they want to stop support for copper land lines, in most of the state, at least in the most populous areas where anyone lives. It has to get approval but I figure this trend is going to progress to other states, if it hasn't already.

Do you have a Cellular Sales store near you? They are a Verizon retailer. I only mention them because the last time I was in there getting a new phone they certainly did have flip phone options. This was about a year ago.

@silkyk All part of the dumbing down of America.

Communication skills are being lost, with people, especially young people addicted to their phones. Spelling, reading, proper grammar, cursive writing, math skills and simple things like reading a clock, don't seem to have much importance anymore.

I hope that there are enough literate people in this population, that we don't become a third world nation. It is sad, what I have been seeing, especially in the young.

I worked in the publics schools for 32 years and I have seen young teachers who do not even care about reading. Phones, TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, social media, reality shows and trashy TV seem to be what holds the interest of many today.

Very sad!

It's getting to the point where smart phone ownership has become an essential part of daily life. Seems many forms of business transactions needs a smart phone.

I have never owned a smart phone (and it's not going to happen either) and I find it's getting more and more difficult to do business w/o one.

Most everything is done on our phones these days. Particularly if you are still working and have children and are not at home for most of the day on most days. It's a fact of life. It has nothing to do with dumbing down adults or kids.

I know many people who have made resolutions to reduce screen time- whether it's watching shows, answering texts, checking email- they are making a conscious effort to stay off their phones.

Digital minimalism is a great thing for people who seek to turn off all the noise and info you get from your phone, which is just a handheld computer. The "dumb" phones, or whatever they are called are great for people who never use their phones or for those who want to ensure they are not tempted to scroll throughout the day.

Whatever works for each individual is what's best.

Nope--sorry--but I would not be without my phone!! I enjoy technology and enjoy all the convience of it. I don't "live" on my phone, never have, but it does make my life easier.

My husband has carried a flip phone thru Verizon for at least 10 years; last update was 5 years ago, but he will only agree to carry a simple flip phone.

@SilleeMee I know what you mean. So many places now, just expect and assume that any and all transactions need to be done on a cell phone.

I do have an inexpensive LG Tracfone and carry it when I leave the house, in case of emergency. I don't need to text anyone. I prefer to speak to them on my home phone or visit in person.

I refuse to spend over a thousand dollars for a cell phone plus the monthly service charge. I already spend over $300. a month for home phone, internet and cable. I refuse to spend extra for streaming services on cable too.

Smart phones are very useful tools. Helps ease your life.

If anything needs restricting it is TV screen time. Now that is an addiction problem. So much wasted time. Read, have someone over for cards, take a walk.....

I have a smart phone. I can put it down any time I want. It's easy. I don't know why people make such a big deal out of them, like they're some big, scary monster or something.

"I only keep them in my purse, locked up never to see the light of day." LOL

I do business on my phone. I stay in contact with my family with my phone. I do so many things with my phone. I put it down and have face-to-face conversations with poeple. It doesn't interfere with life. I don't talk on it or interrupt others with it. It just makes my life easier.

I have a smart phone and can't imagine being without one today. It certainly makes my life easier!

Calls, texts, GPS, photos & videos to name a few. It's nice when I want to quickly check on the weather or see when my Amazon order is arriving, etc.

My DD sends either photos or videos of her baby almost everyday. Yes I can see them on my laptop or tablet but sometimes it's just easier to pick up the phone when I hear a notification. As for notifications you can adjust those too.

Tomorrow I have my handmade felting class. I found a video tutorial on YouTube on creating felted flowers. I sent it to my phone so I can go over the steps tomorrow.

I see my smart phone as a very handy tool!
