Loud Banging Noise in My House Last Night!

It was around midnight and all of a sudden, I was awaken by this loud, and I mean loud, banging sound that seemed to almost shake the house. Then it stopped. I thought, was I dreaming? So, since I couldn't get back to sleep, I put the tv on and about 30 minutes later that same sound happened. It sounded like a freight train and a machine gun. Unsure what it was, I called my son.

He came right away and checked it out, and it was air in one of the the water pipes to the boiler because I have baseboard hot water heat and 4 zones. He said it has to be bled tomorrow, so he shut that zone off so it wouldn't bang and clang again. Don't know if anyone else has ever had that happen, but it will scare the heck out of you, especially if you're fast asleep. You would never know that air in a pipe could cause that much noise and that loud!

The house I grew up in had hot water heat. I remember the banging on occasion, It was loud.

I remember my parents getting the " key" to open the valves on the radiators and bleeding some water out.

It would be scary if it happened at night and you didn't know what it was.

I am glad you got it figured out. What a way to be woken up.

That sounds so scary. I've never heard of that! I'm glad your son knew what was going on.So many things to know about houses that we don't know!

My first thought was the pipes.

Three years ago it happened to us in the middle of the day. It was LOUD! I was at the kitchen table working. Sounded as if something extremely heavy fell. Went outside and neighbors were outside too. They heard it. We found out it was the pipes. They were being worked on in the street.

Wow...that would really be scary. We have a 14 ft. vaulted wood ceiling. I remember years ago when it started creaking in very windy cold weather and the deck started popping.

I have the same type of three-zone heat and yep it's noisy. Not banging but more like creaking. Figures it seems to be the noisiest in my bedroom. I just had to have the system bled at the beginning of the season.

On the rare occasion when the water authority is working and turns the water off, I get that rattling when it comes back on and I turn on a faucet. I would not have been alarmed, knowing what it was. Air in the pipes.
