A small plane has crashed in Florida

5 people were on board plane that crashed into vehicle on I-75 in Collier County

COLLIER COUNTY, Fla. — A small plane crashed near Interstate 75 in Collier County at Mile Marker 105 on Friday (also known as the Golden Gate Parkway exit).

According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), a Bombardier Challenger 600 jet crashed on I-75 near Naples at around 3:15 p.m.

Five people were reportedly on board.

As of 4:40, the Collier County Sheriff's Office has confirmed two known fatalities.

FAA closed a large section of I-75 in Collier County. Both southbound traffic at mile marker 111 (Immokalee Road) and northbound traffic at mile marker 105 (Golden Gate Parkway) are closed.

According to data from Flight Radar, the plane was traveling from Columbus, Ohio to Naples, Florida.

NBC2's Dave Elias confirmed that the Naples Airport Tower was in contact with the plane before the crash.

In audio from the Air Traffic Control, the pilot can be heard calling in an emergency. The pilot said they lost both engines and were two miles away from the Naples Airport before saying they would not be able to make it.

I find it strange that we've heard so little about the military helicopter that crashed this week near San Diego. I believe 6 were killed. I had to search to learn if they'd found the wreckage. Nothing on the news.

There has been adequate coverage on news programs I've watched. There was even video showing the terrain and how difficult it is to reach the crash site.

The bodies of the Marines have been located. Notifications to family were made on Wednesday and Thursday but their names have not yet been released to the public.

I had to dig to find this, in news today.

The military confirmed Thursday that all five Marines were killed when their helicopter went down during stormy weather, and efforts were underway to recover their remains.

The aircraft took off from Creech Air Force Base near Las Vegas, Nevada, on,Tuesday night and was heading to the Marine Corps Air Station in Miramar when it went missing.

The Marine Corp released the identities of all five marines killed when their CH-53E Super Stallion helicopter went down in the mountains close to San Diego on Tuesday. The five men have been identified as: Lance Cpl. Donovan Davis, 21, of Olathe, Kansas; Sgt. Alec Langen, 23, of Chandler, Arizona; Capt. Benjamin Moulton, 27, of Emmett, Idaho; Capt. Jack Casey, 26, of Dover, New Hampshire; and Capt. Miguel Nava, 28, of Traverse City, Michigan. The young men were all assigned to Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 361, Marine Aircraft Group 16, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing at Miramar.

I live about 3 miles from a small airport and always cringe when I hear one of them flying near. Seems there are a lot of plane accidents recently. So very sorry for those involved.
