I think it is a new standard procedure. I have never had to replace a credit card with a faulty chip. I usually get a new one when there is about a month left on the old one before it expires. I think the charge of $25 is a service fee and not necessarily the price of a new card.

Maybe they charge to discourage people from being careless with the card or intentionally damaging the card. Most people wouldn't, of course,. but I'm sure there are some that would.

The chip starts to be rejected. Then I wipe it on my shirt and it works. I even clean it, but it fails in the end. The bank always apologizes and sends me a new card with no charge. We've been with the same bank for 45 years, so that might have something to do with it.

I would report it as lost. That way they have to void the current card and give you a new one with a new number. Should be no charge.

Is the bank local or does it have a local branch anywhere. You could walk in and see if anyone can help you. My best guess this is not the case but perhaps, just perhaps there is a place you could go locally.

What I would do would be to keep calling and get advice from the card company. Someone might just help you.

if ANY of my credit card companies wanted to charge me to replace one of my credit cards, i would just close my account and find a new card to use. i think it is ridiculous.

I think some banks do charge for a lost or stolen card. I don't think those chips are as inexpensive as some feel.

It's possible the chip is dirty and as suggested wiped it with an alcohol wipe and see if that makes a difference. Or possibly the metal coating has worn and the chip is defective.

I agree if there is a local branch check in the bank.

I use Debit Cards and March of last year I requested a new Card because the chip had some scratches.

Last December a friend needed help paying a bill on line. I was out so I gave her the number. Once I got home, I went on line and requested a new Card but i said it was lost and I received a new Card in 5 business days. No fee.
