Question About Costco Membership

We don't have a Costco near us, but DS does where he lives. He wants to join, but quite honestly, after rent and utilities, he doesn't have a lot of extra money.

Are there any discounts for joining? He does have AAA. TIA!

@beach-mom I am a BJ member. They do have discounts. Currently new members - $25/yr

Expires end of January.

The discount started 11/23.

If there is a BJ's near him, he may want to check it out.

I don't get it, so if he doesn't have a lot of extra money after rent etc, why would he want to buy mega size packs of things and tie up what little extra money he has on inventory sitting on his shelves. Even more so as a single person....if he is single (kinda sounded like he is). No disrespect intended.😊

We just renewed our Costco membership and DH checked on any discounts, etc. They did not have any, but you may your DS may want to visit the warehouse closest to her. We have the executive membership because we get cash back.

@beach-mom There are currently several promos running on Groupon that look VERY promising where he can get 40 or 20 dollar shop cards depending on which membership level he signs up for.😊 I hope he finds one that best suits his needs because the OVERALL savings are worth it.🤞🤞

@SaveTheTurtles not everything in Costco is sold in mega size packages. Toilet paper, yes. Some stuff is sold in larger than what you get in the grocery store packages, but even if I were single, I would appreciate having the larger packaging. There's also discounts on single purchase items like electronics, tires, clothing items, etc.

However, I would agree with you that it might not be the best purchase for someone who is cash-strapped.

@SaveTheTurtles - No problem! He is young and single, and he needs tires. One of his coworkers recommended Costco. He grew up going to BJ's.

Just got tires from Costco so the membership fee was more than covered. Nice savings on eyeglasses, appliances. It just depends upon how you shop.

I am single and have memberships to both Costco and Sam’s Club. Each has its place for me. I buy all my gas exclusively at Costco. My car uses premium gas and their gas is top tier. Sam’s gas is not. The savings on gas alone is nice.

Bless your heart @beach-mom I wish my response could be more helpful.

My late hubby kept both Costco and Sams when we moved to Washington State from Florida. But, Costco was more prevelant here since it was born and raised in WA. I was not the shopper in the family, but he maintained the Costco Executive Business Account since we had a business for decades. And eventually, he dropped Sams as it was miles away and Costcos were within shouting distance. He even added our daughter on the card going to school in Georgia to help her out for basics. Bless his heart, I was clueless.

Bottom line, after his passing I still have the Executive Account with Costco.The local workers said wait and see if money wise it worked out better for me. As I questioned if I needed or wanted it, but it has worked out fine. I don't spend like he did, but I appreciated having the option to do 2-day delivery to my doorstep for basics (toilet paper, paper towels, etc.) that are sold even online at a great price as I don't get to the brick and mortar as much as I've aged. And, I get rebates twice a year between the credit card used and the Executive Membership. Those rebates easily pay for the membership.

Don't know if this helps you, but it may help someone. And, talk with the local customer service folks. They were very helpful to me with various questions.

You don't have to be a member to shop at Costco dot com. As a non-member you are not able to buy 'members only' items items but that still leaves a lot. As a non-member a 5% surcharge will be added to any purchase but that is still a good deal b/c their prices are so low to begin with.

@beach-mom Everything is spelled out on the Costco website. There are more benefits by purchasing an Executive Membership over a Regular. DH and I have been executive members for over 20 yrs. Costco is more than warehouse shopping. We get our eye exams and glasses there for less. We've purchased tires several times. We have our home and auto insurance though their partner company. We have a Costco branded visa credit card that we get rebates on. We get a big check annually. Our executive membership also has separate rebates for certain purchases. That check is always enough to cover our membership renewal fee.

Yes, Costco does offer perks for new members. When you join, they offer you a gift card.

Sam's Clubs is even better. From time to time, new members only can get a one year membership for only $5.

Here's an example of Costco's offerings. Costco membership is going to go up, so I wouldn't wait.

@beach-mom I was going to buy tires from Costco with my membership, but then I found that Discount tires had a better deal. They currently have a good sale going but it expires at the end of this month.

Last year I needed tires and checked around and found the best price at Costco (I had previously downgraded my membership to just Gold star as I wasn't get at least $60 back at end of year), so when I went online to order the tires was given option to get the Costco Visa card which you actually can save more money at end of year with the different discounts.

I get anywhere from 2% to 4% cash back; I believe gas is 3 or 4% and that is one place I get alot of my gas.
