@On It - This is actually a photoshopped picture.

I have always been around the ocean. And I was always a water baby. My mom was a champion swimmer who almost made the Olympic team. She made sure my late brother and I loved the water too, and we both did. We were both lifeguards, and I taught swimming. I was on a team.

At the beach I would be out in the water as often as I could. I would watch my mom, sitting on a blanket on the sand, say, "I think I'll go take a dip." Then I would see her way out, swimming smoothly and strongly parallel to the shoreline.

I first got tossed by a wave when I was about 10. I remember it well. We were at Jacksonville Beach. I got turned around and couldn't find the top. I remember being so scared, but I guess it didn't affect me much.

I loved to go out, tread water, and watch the dolphins. They seemed close enough to touch, but of course they weren't. The water is so smooth way out.

About 3 years ago I got tossed around again. This time I was in trouble. I was on my way out when a wave knocked me over. Another one was right on top and knocked me down again. DH was reading on the beach. Someone came and helped me out. The lifeguards were standing up watching.

I realized then I wasn't going to be going out any longer. I still go in, but I stay very close to the shoreline. And I make sure someone younger goes with me! The beach also seems a lot different today.

Our children both grew up there and swim in the ocean like I used to. DD was a lifeguard and swim instructor. DS is qualified, but never worked at the pool.

DH's parents didn't like the water and didn't swim. Neither did he. After we married he became a "sort of" beach baby too! He took lessons!

I have never been on a cruise. I don't know how I would feel if I were out where I couldn't see land. DD's one coworker goes on a cruise every year.

ETA: I remember the summer Jaws came out. Not too many people in the water that summer, and a lot of false alarms.

I remember reading someone's quote, which I really like: "The sharks and I have an agreement. I stay out of their ocean; they'll stay off my land."

Although I have visited areas and beaches on the Pacific, Atlantic, and Gulf of Mexico, I have never touched the water. I fear the ocean because I am not equipped to survive there.

The water or the whale? Neither one can really hurt you, unless you panic. The whale is toothless. It's throat is not big enough to swallow you. If you panic you're more apt to harm or frighten the whale. Swimming is wonderful. The ideal exercise. Especially ocean water. You're more buoyant in salt water. scared of sharks? Try swimming in a pool. Learning to swim will change how you feel about water.

I used to feel more at home in the ocean than on land.

But the past years I've been more aware of sharks which I never even thought of before.

I was a lifeguard, on swim teams and would stay in the ocean all day, my family calling me to come in when the waves got so huge. I am pretty sure I was a dolphin and they can protect you from sharks.

Sadly I am kind of afraid of them now. Also for my grandkids. You know that is just how living life goes sometimes.

Many people fear the water, especially the ocean. I am not or ever was a very good swimmer so when my kids were 3 and 5 they took swimming lessons at the Boys and Girls club. I didn't want them to miss out on the joys of the ocean. I totally get it, though I do go out on boats and to the beach as we only live 45 minutes from the water........but there is always that feeling deep inside.

It is what the ocean can do that makes me avoid it.

not particularly afraid of the ocean, but can certainly understand anyone being afraid . If not a good swimmer especially . I am a decent swimmer, but don't like going to far out . When younger though I would and never give it a thought. . I won't however take a cruise , I wouldn't want to be way out in the middle of the Atlantic , no way to get off , I would feel trapped . besides just seeing water as far as I could see and not see land could be scary I feel. Will do a river cruise though.

Most of the time the things I have feared the most, seem to be the easiest and don't warrant the fear I have attached to it..IMO That being said, what a cool picture!

Our favorite lake isn't the lake. It is the river flowing into the lake. I can easily imagine swimming to either bank. All the while weighing way less than 100lbs.

Amazing the level of fearlessness when young.

Probably depends on whether or not you grew up with water and the comfort level attached to it.

I absolutely think that is a photoshop. However, I won't negate the OP's fear, though I'm sorry she has that fear. The ocean is amazing and mystical.

I grew up on the beach. My house was right on the beach. I had no fear. I have gone on cruises, and I have been on island beaches.

Today I would never go in the ocean. It scares me.

As for the picture. It is scary. The whale can do a lot of damage. I wouldn’t want to be on top of it in the water.

I've always loved and respected the ocean but I've never cared to swim in it. There are too many critters (large and small) for me. I don't swim in lakes, ponds and rivers either. However, I have no issue or fears if I'm on any size boat.
