Different washe/dryer question:

I will be recieving a new washer and dryer soon. I plan to run an empty load in the washer with hot water and detergent before the first load of clothes.

I have no idea what to do with the dryer. What do you suggest?

I have never done this but I would suggest running a load of old towels rags etc in both machines.

@BeeChee Don't understand your question. Surely you know what to do with a dryer; put something wet in it and turn. It on.

Are you saying you want to test it out, just do a very small load of clothes, put them in dryer. This would be a good way to test both appliances at same time.

most new washers have a clean cycle on them, we use it monthly in between loads HTH

I have had new washers and dryers throughout the years. Once they are hooked up, I load them up and use them. I don't do any type "prewash" or pre-dryer load.

Just use them and enjoy them!

The poster wants suggestions in how to clean the dryer before she uses it to dry clothes. I would suggest to put a dryer sheet by itself in the dryer first then dry your clothes.

I would put some old towels in the washer on large load with hot water and the recommended amount of detergent. Then I would put those in the dryer on hot. I believe that would take care of manufacturing residue or germs.

I did the old towels for both machines for my first load of a new set. If you are washing old then you can dry the freshly washed old.

This made me laugh.

I've never thought of doing anything special either but I guess like washing clothes for the first time, i guess it may be a good idea?

If your asking how to clean the dryer drum before using I used wet wipes, then dried with paper towels... the wet wipes had a small amount of black residue on them. Hope this helps & enjoy your new appliances @BeeChee

You are right @bikerbabe I got a mine in October. He showed me how to use it by running a short cycle on both. So there is no need to clean the machine before you use it.

I never did anything with mine. They never checked them when they installed them either. I just started doing laundry as usual.

It's not a bad idea to run a test run just to make sure your washing machine works. Do it empty or you may be left wringing out wet laundry.

Years ago when I visited my dad a new washing machine was being delivered that morning. When my dad left for work he said don't you break my new washing machine youngin.

Well guess what? I washed a load of laundry but when I went to put the clothes in the dryer it was full of water. Broke dad's new washing machine. LOL!!!

They told dad they would send out a repair guy. Dad told them you will do $%^&? He said you will bring me a new washing machine & pick this one up. He said I bought a new washing machine not a lemon that will need worked on from now on. Same thing I would have told them?

Rather than waste gallons of water and detergent needlessly, all I have ever done is use a clean rag with some Ivory soap suds or Dawn and clean the interior tub of the washer and dryer. ( Or white vinegar on the rag. )

Maybe a short rinse on the washer and a hand towel for 5 mins. in the dryer.

Just had to replace our washer and dryer. It is a good idea to test them -- especially the dryer (says the person who had to return two dryers before finally getting one that worked properly).

This last time, we made the delivery people stay for a "quick test" of just a damp wash cloth running through a timed cycle to prove that the dryer was heating up and not just blowing air.

Here's how we tested the dryer when the third one arrived last week, after it passed the quick test:

Took about 5 wash cloths and 3 hand towels
Wet them and rung them out so that they were damp but not dripping wet
Ran a small load on the auto sensor setting with other larger, already dry towels (in our model, the sensor won't detect that they're dry unless the load is large enough).
Then we repeated the process with a timed dry cycle -- but without the larger dry towels.

Lessons learned from the first two dryers which blew air but did not heat up. Definitely make sure the unit works before running two large loads through the washer and having nowhere to dry them (aka NYE here).

ETA: on each of the three deliveries of the dryer, the installers did run a "quick cycle" -- but it was only 5 minutes or so. And it didn't really do anything -- just demonstrated that it turns on, goes in circles, and makes some noise. None of their test cycles proved that it was heating up sufficiently & properly. (They also advised us that this function also burns off some fumes and to leave the dryer door open for a few hours before really using it. So, we did indeed do that after they left the third time and we knew the machine was working.)

I only use dryer balls, keep 4 in my dryer at all times, I use the silicone ones with the spokes, not the wool ones. They last for years. Dryer sheets are not good for so many reasons, not used them in many years.

I just started using my new machines straight away. Never knew you had to do anything special first. Never had a problem.
