Wierd feeling when getting hair rinsed out at the hair salon.

I have kind of an odd question, wondering if this has happened to anyone else.

This happened to me about a year ago but I was getting over a cold so I attributed it to that. Yesterday I was getting my hair done and when she went to rinse out my hair I had a sensation I couldn't breath when my head was back in the sink thing. She had to rinse for quite a while she had put a lot of dye in my hair.

Luckily my stylist is kind and understood she let me kind of sit up and said she would just throw towel down on the floor after if there was water on the floor. My stylist said something like that had happened to her once when she was gettin a massage.

Has anyone else had this happen? It makes me afraid to go get my hair done again. I do feel slightly congested so maybe that was why?

I feel you were probably congested from your cold.

If you are up to date with your medical checkups and they listen to your chest and check your blood pressure you should be ok. I'd call if you feel hesitant about your health.

@spumoni99 If the breathing issue happened twice while you were congested, I would attribute what you felt to that.

I have neck issues and when being rinsed at the salon, they give me a soft brace to put under my neck while at the sink and also add a towel. That, along with a small foot stool, and I do fine.

Next time, brace your neck while at the sink and see if it still happens.

Years ago I read about some having a stroke while getting hair washed at a salon.

I rarely go but when I have I make sure there is a soft towel under my neck and that I am not uncomfortable.

"The action of tilting the head backwards to wash the hair stretches the neck unnaturally, limiting blood circulation to the brain. This may even cause blood vessels in the neck region to compress or rupture, which can lead to bleeding or clotting. The clot can move up to the brain, causing a stroke.Sep 13, 2023"

Thanks everyone. I will try putting a towel under my neck next time, maybe take a sudafed to make sure I am not congested next time.

I am up to date on my health checks but may mention it next time I go in.

Yes and my physicians don't want me to go to a salon and have my hair washed because of that. I had a stroke in June.

Yes and I am a Type 1 diabetic for 53 years. It is hard though doing my own haircuts. My husband has gotten really good helping me.

@Trinity11 I saw women over the years in the salon turn the chair around at the sink, put towels under their chin, cover their faces and lean forward to be rinsed.

Perhaps you could work with the salon to figure out if this is a possibility for you.

@Mersha , I am a very private person. I would not want to go into detail with a stranger. I had a carotid endarterectomy and a 6 inch scar down the side of my neck. I wear things to conceal it. So no more salons for me. Thanks, though, for the suggestion. Very thoughtful of you.♥️

Can't you just wash your hair at home and then have them spray it to get it wet when you're there? I haven't had my hair washed at a salon in probably 20 years.

She was rinsing out the color chemicals so that has to be done.

My neck is a real piece of work, so I cut a deal. If I show up with still damp clean hair, she will cut it. I can wash it upright in the shower.

Perhaps that would be easier for you? Could you do the dye at home?

@gidgetgh it was buried in the middle of it, so I get it.

In answer to your question though, I think some hairdressers prefer to have their own people do the hair washing to make sure it is thorough, and that way they also know what products were used. I do use some of the same products as my hairdresser uses on my hair, but I don't use near as much or scrub near as well or as long as the tech does.

I sometimes need the towel at the hairdresser because I sometimes get dizzy when my head is lower than my body. Although it hasn't happened yet, I always worry about that when I go to the dentist because they like to recline you to a toes up position. I also have to use something under my head at the gym during some of my leg stretches where I have to lay down.

Hopefully its just because I am congested, I will take a sudafed before my next appointment, it hadn' happened in a year. I will also try the towel under my neck.

My daughter is getting married in March so I do want professional coloring done before that. I use to color my own hair, if it becomes a problem I could go back to that but for sure my lady does a better job than I do.

I also wonder if its just a psycological thing like claustrobia type of thing. When I was a kid my brother would sit on my chest and kind of pound on the area between my chest and neck, ...mean brother!
