Clever AAA Membership Renewal Scam

A message was left today from the "AAA Renewal Department" saying if I call back and renew directly with them I'll receive a $20 gift card. All AAA memberships renew in December.

They didn't use the name of my local AAA club, and my club never gives discounts. Caller ID showed a tollfree number I've never seen and the words AAA Renewal. It was a clever idea and the message sounded 100% legitimate.

Score one for the scammer. I bet some people fell for this.

AAA is never going to call to renew. Just like the IRS is never going to call.

@bikerbabe Actually the IRS called us several years ago. It was a legitimate call, but I never believed them and had our accountant check that out. As I said it was legit,but never heard of them calling anyone else. Oue accountant found out it was a pilot program,but the IRS ended it 'cuz nobody believed them.

oh great, another scam we have to watch out for. I didn't have a scam but I did get a text from AAA trying to get in touch with me because they were outside my house for a service call. LOL I said well I hope not since I didn't call you!

it took about 20 minutes before I could get in touch with someone who could figure out that they had taken the wrong phone # for the person who needed the road side service call. (Sigh). Why did I bother? Well because I was concerned my account was hacked & being used by someone else.

Gotta watch out for everything all the time. It is nuts.

Ours renews in August.

Just an interesting bit of info, don't automatically renew it. Go on line and see what the price of a new membership is.

We signed up as a new member under my husbands name and it was HALF the price of what it would have been had we left it in my name.

The retention department will call non-stop for a month after letting the membership expire. It shows up on the Caller ID as AAA Retention Department.

I no longer belong to AAA. GEICO emergency road service is much less expensive.

@CelticCrafter The new membership being cheaper than renewal membership is not available everywhere. In my state AAA, my renewal in August cost the same amount as a new membership would have been.

While I agree this was most likely a scam, they did offer me a discount once. I had to call them for service and the woman noticed it was almost time for my renewal. She said if I did it then over the phone, she would give me a 20% discount.

actually, YES, they will.

if you are late in renewing your membership, they do call you.

they sent me a renewal notice in july or august and our membership did not renew until october. i wont pay it that early. after that initial renewal notice i kept getting calls from AAA to renew so my coverage does not lapse.

Mine renews in September. It's based on when you signed up so this kind of an email should be a red flag. That's why I get my renewal info via U. S. mail.

People still have AAA? I have 24/7 roadside assistance from my automaker. In the past, when we did have AAA, the wait for service was serveral hours. One time they told us they couldn't tow the truck because it was too heavy. But they sure took the money we were paying for years. Not so with what I have now. I've had to have them twice; both times showed up within 15 minutes.
