Capsules Or Tablets

When buying OTC medication do you prefer capsules , Tablets or something else?

Tablets have a longer shelf life and come in a variety of forms. They can also accommodate a higher dose of an active ingredient than a capsule. They tend to be slower acting and, in some cases, may disintegrate unevenly in your body.

Capsules act quickly and most, if not all, of the drug is absorbed. However, they may cost more and expire more quickly.

Gel caps go down easiest for me, followed by tablets IF they have a coating. Powder filled capsules sometimes get hung up.

@aj1980 ... l use Extra Strength Tylenol capsules. It takes my pain away pretty fast. I have fibromyalgia and l just really like how l lie down for a nap...or all night and my pain is gone when l wake up... (most of the time).. It's the only OTC l use. Tried the caplets but they didn't work on this type of pain...so I'm sticking with the capsules...and they work very fast on headaches !!!

I have the exact same problem with a lot of powder filled capsules & uncoated tablets. It must be cheaper for them to make them this way. Vitamin tablets are the worst lol

Many of my dietary supps are loose powders where I measure their exact dosages on a precision scale. My medications/Rxs are mostly tablets and some are gel caps.

I can't answer for anyone else...but for myself, I have a challenge with some pills getting "hung up" or stuck in my throat. Sometimes they just keep coming back up and I have to keep trying to re-swallow. I find this to be especially true for any medication that's not coated. However, sometimes it even happens with capsules. I guess it just depends on the coating that's used. I actually had to get my prescription potassium in powder form because I was having serious problems trying to get the pills to digest...they just wouldn't. But that's a different & far more unpleasant story lol

Tablets and caplets only. I hate it when a large capsule kinda sticks in your throat as you're trying to swallow it....and then you quickly grab more water and swallow to keep from choking....not a good thing.dont have that problem with tablets and caplets.

A rock hard formula like a caplet or tablet have a longer shelf life, way beyond the printed exp date.

After hearing Dr. Lessman explain how tablets often pass through the digestive system undisolved, I try to get my meds and supplements either in capsules or softgels.

@EastCoastGal not sure how else to say it. They get hung up in my throat or entrance to my throat. In other words, i have trouble swallowing them.

I use both.

Capsules for quicker relief, tablets so I have the option to cut it in half so as to take the lowest effective dosage.

Lessman is just Andrew, not a doctor, but actually a lawyer.
