Had my daughter on Dec 23,1982 and got to spend 3 days in the hospital recovering, like was the norm for giving birth back then---the xmas day rush was on and there were a large number of moms and babies going home that day-- but I stayed put and literally had the whole maternity ward to myself---nurses came right away when I rang for them, had my meals on time and was pretty much pampered --the spouse and I had a wonderful champagne, steak and lobster dinner--ahhh so nice!!! Went home on Xmas day and the real world began

I'm glad you ended up all right after your first more than difficult Christmas.

And I can only imagine how painful breaking your wrist was! I hope you heal quickly.

Growing up, my mother always placed the emphasis on Christmas being a religious holidays. My gifts were oranges, hair barrettes, books. Simple but given with love.

Fast forward many years later to the mid-eighties. Dinner at my mother's and us three children there, celebrating. My mother put out champagne glasses but put a $100 bill in each of our glasses. It was so kind and touching. It was her way of saying we celebrated the small things with gratitude and now, something a bit more grandiose.

We lost her ten years later and not a day goes by I don't think of and miss her. This is but one story of many, many happy Christmases...

I was always the mother who wrapped gifts from Santa on Xmas eve after the kids went to bed. I was always running late.

One year, I vowed to get done early and I did. A few days before Xmas I got strep throat and scarlet fever. I was so, so sick I couldn't physically get out of bed.

My husband woke me up after midnight on Xmas eve and wanted to know if I bought gifts and if I did, where I put them. I was too sick to care. He worked the midnight shift and came home in the middle of the night to check on me.

I told him where they were and went back to sleep. He was shocked they were all wrapped. So, he did the Santa duties.

It was the first and last time I was ready ahead of time.

When my kids were little, every Christmas, one of the grandkids was sick on my MIL's sofa, mostly my nieces and nephews. Oh, what memories.

Last year I had a knee replacement on December 13. I was feeling great on Christmas and got a break. My son held dinner at his house. It was the first relaxing Christmas I had in years.

12-13-18 I had cervical spine fusion. I couldn't do anything I normally would in preparation for holiday company. Our kids showed up on Christmas with groceries and made dinner while I sat. Our son-in-law (still "to be" then) took command of the kitchen and made a delicious pork loin while the others pitched in where needed.

DD was born in November, and I got the bright idea to make stockings for us. I was planning to embroider our names in script and some little Christmas symbols next to our names.

I worked on them the week before, thinking I'd have plenty of time. I didn't. I still had things to wrap when we came home from Christmas Eve services. So I wrapped and went back to my stockings. I wasn't paying attention to the time, but I had the TV on.

Finally, I went upstairs to bed and flopped across it. DH wasn't there. I didn't remember the phone ringing, so no emergency calls. He came out of our bathroom fresh from his shower and dressed nicely. I asked him where he was going. He said he was going to the airport to get my mom. I asked what time it was. He said 5:00. I had just drifted off to sleep when DD started to cry. She was a preemie and it was time for her to eat.

That was the first time I stayed up all night Christmas Eve. Ironically something has kept me up all night ever since. After we unwrap the presents, and I serve the breakfast casserole, that no one wants because they're eating candy, I go back to bed for a while.

(Last year I did get to bed a little earlier because I led the Christmas morning service! Christmas Day was Sunday, and although we had already had two services Christmas Eve, we needed to have our regular service. I planned our regular Sunday service. There were more people there than I thought, about 20. I kept the sermon short, and we had a sweet service!)

We'll see what this year is like!
