How silly did you dress for weather when you were a teen?

I live in a very cold state. Today the winds will blow 30-40 mps making it feel like -15.

So my teenage daughter wore a windbreaker to school and under that she has a short sleeve top on.

I tried to reason with her but she didn't listen. I think it will be good for her to be cold when she walks home from the bus stop.(don't worry, it's not that far)

I see boys wearing shorts year round and most just wear a hoodie as their coat.

Did we dress this poorly when we were young? I recall not wanting to wear a hat or boots but I did wear a winter coat.

From what I've heard, it's not cool to wear a coat. No one on earth could keep me from wearing a coat in the winter. Even if I were a teen.

I remember hating to wear a coat. Didn't want to have to lug it around to classes and wouldn't fit in my locker. Plus, as I tell DH all the time, we didn't feel the cold when we were young. LOL

I learned really quick to choose warmth over style when we lived in Brussels and Bruges.

When i was a teen we walked a long way to school and we wore coats, gloves and boots when it snowed. My Mom constantly tried to get me to wear a hat but you know how teens are about their hair.

I know I wore a coat and gloves. I don't think I wore a hat or boots.

My kids wear a sweatshirt to school - very rarely a coat. They have fingerless gloves, but don't wear them often.

I see boys walking from the parking lot in just their short sleeve uniform shirt or maybe a little hoodie. I guess it doesn't bother them.

Back on a cold day in November I was up near the local high school when a young teen girl walking to school went by me wearing a very sheer summer blouse and no coat. It was around thirty degrees and she was obviously freezing, but she apparently didn't care as long as she looked good. It's a little crazy what kids will do.

I grew up where we had some cold and snowy winters and I hated when I was little and my mom would bundle me up like an Eskimo. I remember protesting but it did no good... I would get the full winter regalia of sensible coat, scarf, mittens, sometimes earmuffs, all on top of a sweater and pants, or if I was wearing a skirt there were the woolen tights. Makes me itchy just thinking about it. When I finally got old enough to rebel I would leave the house in winter without a coat, it was all about fashion, not being warm enough. I used to drive my mom crazy. I can still hear her saying "take a coat" as I ran out the door. Bless her. Looking back I am thankful I she made me dress warmly. Funny how we don't appreciate some of those things our parents do for us until we are older ourselves.

I lived in southern California so we didn't really have any ""weather""; it was always sunny and warm and we dressed for that.

I never liked to wear hats.

When I take the hat off steam would come from the top my head from the heat being trapped under there.

Not a good look when you are trying to look cute!

i stopped buying my kids heavy coats (and myself also). they prefer to dress in layers when it is cold, even when we had the zero degrees last week. yes, i have a son who will wear shorts in 50 degree weather. i see girls wearing sandals in 50 degree weather also. no hats, but sometimes a hoodie. they always come home saying how HOT it is in their school during this time of the year AND how COLD it is during the hotter weather.

i dressed totally different when i was a teenager.

It is one thing to see shorts and short sleeves at the high school in December or January but I remember being in the car rider line picking up the kids at the elementary school and it would be VERY COLD outside and I'd see all these little K & 1st and 2nd graders standing out there in short sleeves, sometimes shorts and I'd wonder WHO DRESSES these children in the morning? Finally they started leaving the kids in the cafeteria and the car loaders, the assistant principal and teachers on duty learn to know which cars belong to which kids and with their handy dandy walkie talkies and the hang tag number hanging from the rear view mirror call them out . . . so at least they weren't standing out in the elements for 30 or more minutes.

Speak for yourself. I remember wearing knee socks and a wool sweater and skirt in Southern California in September

I did not always want to wear a hat, didn't like scarves either. I would wear gloves. There definitely times I didn't want to wear a big heavy coat, and I usually paid for it by freezing all the way home.

I grew up in So Cal so it was never really cold. I remember when it used to rain we would stand under the drain pipes and get soaked cause we would get sent home to change. Now I live where it's cold & my grandson wears a sweatshirt only when it's snowing.

When I was in HS in the early 60's, we all had the HS jacket (3/4 length, wool, hooded) and it was considered 'fruity' to zip up your jacket. So even in the coldest weather, we'd cross the two front panels over us, and secure them with our books we carried! (Isn't that the silliest thing?!) And never NEVER wear the hood, perish the thought! Also stockings and sneakers or loafers were popular, and since we weren't allowed to wear slacks to school, there were a lot of red legs by the time we all got to school! So being young and foolish isn't a new thing!
