Group Card Games

Do you play group card games such as bridge, canasta? I never heard of hand and foot canasta. Had to search that one.

Are you beginner or advanced? Do you mind teaching new players? What games are easily learned and the most social?

Arn't bridge players serious card gamers?

My husband's family grew up playing card games.

My family played poker, but adults only. Me and my sister were relegated to playing outside or some board game.

While I am now able to play a few games, I am no where near as good a player as my husband or his sister. They are very near "card counter" status. So annoying

I do enjoy Canasta, Spades, Oh Hell, and Shanghai. There are normally 4 of us playing. While I play for fun, I always feel I'm playing in a tournament when playing with my husband's family. They say it is all for "fun" but...

I never played Bridge, but it's likely too serious for me. And, I think you play as couples...I like playing solo! Every now and then I win a game and I laugh saying, "even a blind squirrel finds a nut now and then."

Never heard of "hand and foot" Canasta, but there are so many variants to most games.

It's a nice way to pass the time with a small group, but learning as an adult, I am an amateur.

Our favorite game to play with a group is Bunco. Ideally, you need at least 8 people, preferably in groups of 4. It's a fast moving, simple dice game. And you are always moving to different tables, so you aren't sitting with the same people all night. Great way for people to get to know each other. Very easy to learn.

Some people call bridge a sport, because like many sports it operates on many different levels. Just like baseball, football, basketball, tennis, etc. most bridge players operate at some level below the professionals.

I've played in games which included some of those professionals; I didn't always embarrass myself, but I knew I was outclassed!

I grew up playing Pinocle. My father held "pinocle" night once a month at the house. They played w/chips.

In college I played Bid Wisk & learned Poker.

My aunt taught me how to play using hand moves/signals casino Poker & my children taught me the same w/Blackjack.

SIL is currently teaching me Baccarat.

There is a woman that I have known for more than ten years in my community that teaches canasta, hand & foot & Mahjong. I took Mahjong from her and it was fun.

However the pandemic shut down our group and she started to play online. Some people from the group have resumed playing but while I enjoyed it, it was just not really for me.

According to her, Canasta & hand & foot (which is a version of canasta) is easier than MahJong.

@haddon9 I didn't know Mahjong was also a group card game. I've only played the tile version.

I loved to play Canasta years ago. No one seems to play anymore. I like to play pinochle and when I was still at home we played double pinochle.

I like playing card ganes where a hand takes some time like the above mentioned. I play poker and eucher for instance but don't really like them - fast handed games.

In college cafeteria we played a lot of Hearts and I still like that one.

@Mz iMac As far as I know it is just a tile group game. I mentioned it because my friend who teaches both MahJong & canasta says that canasta is easier. I tried to lean it many years ago and found it more difficult than MahJong...just my opinion though.

ETA: Bottom line though I'm not really a gamer. I prefer arts & crafts.

My parents always played cards so I grew up playing cards, though never Bridge, and my daughter has card night with her friends and now her daughters are getting in on the cards in elementary school. All different games through the generations but still cards. Very fun and interactive vs. everybody just sitting on their phones playing games.

My favorite is Euchre but that's only 4 people. We play Spades if there are 5 or 6. Sometimes rummy or gin rummy. I can't even count the number of random other game-specific decks of cards I have. That used to be a staple in the Christmas stockings.

I grew up with gin rummy and Tripoly. It was a law in our family. You play.

One of my favortie vivid memories as a little girl with my grandmother is sitting at her little kitchen table by the window playing Fish and Old Maid.

My first husband and I were playing bridge with his parents. My husband was cheating, and his father socked him in the jaw and knocked him out.

Too violent for me, and I quit playing cards.

I've been playing with a group of ladies for years on Tuesday, Wednesday and Fridays.

We play canasta, international rummy and Rummy cube. These ladies play bunko once a month and sometimes I'll be a substitute as they prefer to play with full teams.

I enjoy the ladies and we do dinner once in awhile so that's nice too🙂

We always invite others and these are easy games to learn.

I used to play maj jong for years but Covid stopped the ladies from playing & the group never started up again. (Not my fav game).

The thread title reminded me of a childhood memory. When I was a kid we'd drive to visit my grandparents in the Pocono Mtns.

After the kids were settled in for the night, the adults used to love to play cards and talk about this and that.

I know they played other things besides gin and poker, but those seemed to be the most fun. My grandfather had a huge jar of pennies, and everyone got a portion and played "aggressively". Hours of laughter and fun.

At the end of the evening, no matter who won or lost, all the pennies went back into the jar for the next time.

Everyone went to bed happy and tired from laughing so much.
