Burning Man Crisis

70,000 people are being told to shelter in place at Burning Man. A deluge left the site a muddy mess. No food or supplies have been able to come into the site. The porta potties cannot be emptied. This sounds like a nightmare.

I am understanding the attendees are camping at the site, so maybe they have some necessities. I could not understand how the situation could get worse, but some attendees are getting ill.

I don't know what 'Burning man' is all about but I looked at some pictures on the internet and it looks insane.

I have no idea either. I think it is in Nevada. Las Vegas is flooding, too.

It sounds pretty bad. It's located on a playa 2 - 3 hours north of Reno. Normally, Burning Man is a fun experience in the desert for well-to-do people, tech executives, and a mish-mash of personalities. It lasts one or two weeks, I'm not sure.

When you have such unsanitary conditions, all sorts of nasty diseases can raise their ugly heads including cholera. You'd think they could send supplies in by helicopter but I don't know that would be feasible for 70,000 people.

Is this our "Disaster of the Week"?

@LTT1 My friend's son and daughter in law attend. They are highly educated professionals (with advanced degrees) from an average middle class family. I guess the "event" has some kind of magnetism.....

I was told it was like Woodstock for wealthy people.

I doubt if many of them are used to "roughing it."

In reality, it's a mix of young and old, with many celebrities and wealthy participating. It was doomed from the start this year. It was a nightmare in the making.

It's always rough going at Burning Man, even without a crisis. But all signs showed it should've been cancelled due to safety concerns.

People were told to bring their own supplies ( food, water) to the event. There are little to no vendors selling anything, so people should have been prepared.

All that rain, mud and free love ...wallowing in filth, reminds me of Woodstock.

I so feel sorry for those in tents, but those in campers should be okay. Someone even brought a boat.

@Desertdi "bra burning" is a myth. Also "freedom trash cans" were not set on fire during the 1968 demonstration against the Miss America pageant.

The myth was started by Lindsey Van Geller.

The tag is still used today. While a bra or two may have been burned at some point in time the whole concept of bra burning feminists is not true.

One death was reported. Weather predictions are shown days ahead, so it was reckless not to cancel Burning Man. They might not have expected that much rain, but organizers should have known about stormy weather approaching. There is no excuse for this to be happening. It could have been loss of money to cancel but that's the chance one always takes. Money came before safety.

I saw a report that said people are generously sharing food. It also said it would be days before cars can drive out of there. The wet soil was compared to cement. Boots get stuck in it while walking and are difficult to extract.
