Do you give tips to workmen?

My husband always did and I have been. But now I'm wondering. I have a guy coming out tomorrow to reattach a piece of soffit (I think) that came down a few days ago during a storm. For what he's charging ($250) and for how long it's likely to take him (not long) I just don't know. But he does have to get up on a pretty tall ladder. And I appreciate this guy is coming out so quickly and he does all sorts of handyman and yard type work so I may be able to use him in the future. So I probably should give a tip. But how much? 20%?

yes I'd say go for 20% apparently that is the going rate for tipping and I'm finding that amount garners acceptance and shows appreciation.

Especially go for it if you would like him to come back out another time for those additional jobs.

I would give him the amount he quoted you and no tip. If he is a handyman then he works for himself and he quoted what he wants. No to tipping.

@FranandZoe If he is a professional handyman & he provides you w/a "contract" of what is to be done plus cost, I would NOT tip. Climbing a tall ladder is part of the job.

If he is the neighborhood handyman = Jack of All Trades & Master of "some" Trades, then I would tip between 15%-20% depending on how satisfied I am w/the job done.

I would not tip in this situation. There are certain professions where it's appropriate but not every T, D, and H. need or deserve one. He's getting plenty from you for a relatively small job.

Seriously? Since when did we start tipping everybody for everything? We tip generously in a restaurant and for haircuts....... that's about it. Even the haircuts used to bug me a little. Their pricing like everything else has become ridiculous. We now go to my niece who manages a Super Cuts where the price is reasonable and we get a senior discount!

Anyway I digress, NO tip, sorry.

@FranandZoe No, I wouldn't tip him. I assume he's in business for himself. $250 seems like a lot for what sounds like a pretty simple job.

NO as a general rule. The price for someone to come to my house includes extra charges for that services.

the only time I have tipped someone is when I felt they really did go above and beyond for the work they did.

Most handymen work for themselves so that would be a no.

Even if they are an employee, still a no.

Tips are getting out of hand.

He's getting paid for the job you hired him for so I wouldn't tip.

If we go to the restaurant to eat or places like that we tip since that's part of their wages.

They want a tip now when you order a pizza for pickup?

After the job is done and done right then I would ask for some extra business cards from the worker to send out as good word for the work done. Getting referrals is good business practice.

Unless this person does extra work not previously mentioned for the $250, then no tip.

As others stated, tipping is way out of control.

😹😹😹 Yes .... I told him he'd look far better in a blue & green flannel shirt as it would enhance the color of his blue eyes, as opposed to those red/ orange things that he always wears.

Then I gave him two chocolate chip cookies, said thank you and goodbye.

I will often give a bottle of water and a Kit Kat bar to a worker.

My plumber charges $139.00 trip charge. Their office is 3 miles from my house.

If you feel you want to tip him, I wouldn't give him 20%. Maybe $20 and tell him to have lunch on you. But certainly not necessary.

I would not tip in this scenario. In general I am reining in my tipping as it has gotten kind of crazy.

Depends. My hubby is a big tipper when someone does a great job because he wants them to remember and prioritize us the next time we need something done.
